Basic Ceiling Terms

If you are looking for a ceiling or roofing contractor or a construction company to put your ceiling in, then these basic terms and concepts may be able to help you make sure that you get exactly what you want and avoid any mishaps.

  • Acoustic – Also known as popcorn ceiling, this is a spray on material that is cheap and easy to apply to a ceiling. This material is often used to hide stains or other faults in the ceiling. Because their original usage went hand in hand with asbestos, if you have an older home with an old looking acoustic ceiling, then you might want it to be tested to be for asbestos.
  • Sagging – Ceilings made of drywall can end up sagging for a few different reasons. One is that the material is exposed to extreme heat or humidity before being installed, causing the drywall to warp. Another common cause is simply improper support; being installed with the panels too far apart, causing one or more to be unsupported, will lead to the material sagging. Both of these scenarios are avoidable and should not occur when being installed by a professional roofing contractor or construction company.
  • False Ceiling – Also known as a dropped or suspended ceiling, this is placed below the actual ceiling and is a series of plastic, metal, or fiber tiles or panels. These are usually used to hide HVAC systems, pipes, or various other objects. It is also used to hide the unattractive look of the ceiling when there’s a floor above you and also to control the sound absorption. For the purposes of sound absorption, metal tiles aren’t usually preferable; a contractor should be able to tell you the best material to use for this purpose.

Ceiling contractors fill a unique niche in the world of home repair and construction. They work with individual customers and the occasional company to install a variety of ceiling and wall systems. These systems include heating, insulation, electric, roofing, and many others. Contractors often work with plaster and drywall. They may, for instance, plaster over a popcorn ceiling. Or they may use drywall to properly insulate a home. Contractors also often work with metal, especially steel, and they are skilled at pouring concrete as well. Contractors also engage in more specialized work. From time to time customers may ask them to install acoustic tile in their houses. They may also ask them to create a suspended ceiling or a drop ceiling. But contractors don't just install new systems. They also remove old, defective systems. They are frequently asked, for example, to repair damaged ceilings and remove asbestos from old buildings. They are familiar with a variety of systems, and they work with a variety of construction materials and textures. They often design and build custom panels and tiles. Good ceiling contractors are nothing if not versatile, and they can engineer and install a variety of different systems. Ceiling contractors are capable of performing a variety of highly specialized tasks, and they can be counted on to fulfill all of your home improvement needs! Anyone interested in learning more about ceiling systems should consult their local contractor. He'll surely be happy to answer questions about topics as seemingly mundane as roofing or poured concrete or metal systems, and it's unlikely that you'll be able to stump him with any of your questions!
