Ceiling Terminology
Ceilings provide a room with visual interest. Ceilings can be tiled, popcorn patterned, paneled, molded, painted or have an elegant fan. Some ceilings are outfitted with speaker systems, specially designed light fixtures and other practical devices. If you are interested in remodeling your home, then the following terms for different ceiling styles might help you decide what type of aesthetic you want:

Cathedral Ceiling: A type of high ceiling that slants upward to a central point. This type of ceiling is commonly used in cabins and, obviously, churches and cathedrals.

Vaulted Ceiling: A ceiling that slopes upward, but not necessarily to a single point. The slant can be offset, barrel shaped or an arch. Vaulted ceilings create the impression of a great deal of space to an otherwise small room.

Tray Ceiling: A ceiling that has the center cut out of it in a tray-like shape. They start horizontally at the intersection of the wall and ceiling and then extend upward, usually about six inches from the wall.

Cove Ceiling: A ceiling that is arched from the wall intersection to give a rounded or domed effect, rather than sharply angled. Cove ceilings are fairly rare since they require extra building materials, time and skill to produce.

Beam Ceiling: A ceiling with exposed wooden support beams extending from one wall intersection to another. The beams can be horizontal, boxed or incorporated into vault or cathedral designs.

Barrel Vault Ceiling: A ceiling that is arched in a barrel-like pattern.

Coffered Ceiling: A ceiling that has a decorative raised checkered pattern, usually ornamented with moulding. Coffered ceilings differ from box beam ceiling in that the pattern is completely decorative and provides no support.
