Important Cemetery Terms

Cemeteries are located all over the world. These designated burial grounds and graveyards are visited by millions of people each year. As you surely know, a wide array of headstones, crosses, monuments and plaques are placed in cemetery locations to honor the deceased. When it is time for the interment or burial of a corpse, a memorial is typically conducted. Depending on the national cemetery or graveyard location, some pets are also buried with their owners or families. This is also typically recorded on a headstone. Here you will find a few helpful terms that pertain to cemeteries.

  • Epitaph – This is essentially a statement or phrase that is written for someone who has died. The epitaph is often engraved on a tombstone or memorial as a type of record so that people can see it for years to come.
  • Inurnment – When someone chooses to be cremated after death, this is the process of placing the cremated remains inside of an urn. It is common for the urn to be put in a grave or placed on display to be remembered.
  • Committal Service – A service that takes place at the time of interment or burial. This is basically the last part of the funeral service, and is when the urn or casket is placed in the ground.
  • Cremains – This refers to the remains of a body after someone or a pet is cremated. Although the word ashes is sometimes used to describe cremated remains, cremains is the correct term.
  • Grave Liner – Many national cemeteries and graveyards have burial plots with grave liners. These are outer containers made from concrete. The casket is placed inside the grave liner, which prevents the grave from sinking or collapsing.

Cemeteries are commonly referred to as grave yards or burial grounds. These locations have existed for many centuries now, and are often where funerals take place. As you may know, people have the option of being buried or cremated after death. Either way, a standard ceremony typically takes place with family and friends paying their respects. An obituary often appears in the local newspaper as well, notifying local people of the death. Some cemetery locations are next to churches or secular buildings. Then again, other cemeteries are located in more of a park setting. This way, after people are buried beneath the ground in coffins or caskets, there are headstones and monuments placed above the ground for information purposes and out of respect and memory for the dead. In the past, it was common for very important rulers and famous individuals to be buried in tombs or mausoleums. While a mausoleum is a large stately building, a tomb is typically an underground vault for burial of the dead. Catacombs were also used frequently in the past for graves. These are like underground cemeteries. Regardless of if you are burying a loved one, friend, or pet, flowers are often placed at the grave site out of respect. Many people bury or cremate their loved ones in accordance to their religious beliefs or practices. You can learn more about funerals, the cremation process, and cemetery locations by getting in touch with a local funeral home. Be sure to ask any questions that pertain to the information you are seeking.
