The idea behind cheerleading date back to the 1800s. A college football coach thought up the idea of getting the crowd to root for his team. In 1898, a Minnesota college student came up with a chant and got the crowd to join in. This led to the formal development of group pep squad. The National Cheerleaders Association was founded in 1948. This group formed camp clinics where girls could practice and master new routines and techniques with a later company founded that provided uniforms and supplies to cheerleaders. Pom-poms came later on after that. Today, girls and boys perform on the sports field or arena. In addition, many schools send their squads to national competitions. Dancing, gymnastics and chants form the basis for this popular sporting event. Matching pom-poms and uniforms which are usually comprised of a short skirt, soft shoes and sweater or a tank top are worn during games and competition stunts. Schools hold try-outs where the participants are judged on coordination, fluid movements, enthusiasm and even volume. Captains need to be heard by their members during noisy varsity sporting events. They've judged on how high they jump, dance skills and any stunts they're able to complete. Those who pass try outs go on to join the team and practice and participate during games. Girls and boys make up these groups that support their team and get the crowd to react in favor of the home team. Middle school, high school and college teams all use these pep groups at home and away games. Their job is to get the crowd involved. Varsity athletes hear the brief chants and are invigorated. Cheers boost moral for a winning or losing team.

Cheerleading involves young girls and boys cheering for their home team. Cheerleaders wear uniforms, shoes, shorts, shirts, skirts, warm-up pants, skorts, and body suits. They typically use pom poms, megaphones and other accessories. Cheerleading can involve stunts, gymnastics and dancing, all in the name of school spirit. Usually performed at the varsity high school and college level, cheerleading can also be seen in pro football and basketball. Cheerleaders who are serious about the sport often go to cheerleading camps to ready themselves and their teams for competition. Competition can get pretty fierce, shoes, packs, jewelry, brands, shell, information, wear, warm-ups, bags, youthso lots of practice is required. Cheerleaders are often seen in parades, as well as at games. Cheerleaders' goal is to rile up the crowd and get support for their team, whether it's a basketball team or football team. Mascots are usually on the sidelines as well, wearing animal or other funny character outfits. To find cheerleading squads in your area, call your local recreation department, or your school's physical education department. To find cheerleading supplies, clothing and accessories, check out cheerleading apparel websites to find wholesalers and retailers catering to the cheerleading market. Most of the time, your school will supply the cheerleading outfits and supplies, including all necessary uniforms, pom poms, megaphones and body suits. You may have to pay a registration fee to cover the cost of the cheerleading supplies.
