FAQs About Childbirth Education
The following questions are commonly asked about childbirth education:

What are Lamaze classes?
Lamaze classes are offered for pregnant women and focus on the Lamaze method of giving birth. The Lamaze method concentrates on natural childbirth and believes that the body will naturally adopt to the pain if the mother remains calm once labor begins and controls her breathing. Therefore, Lamaze classes help teach women how to breathe through their contractions, how to recognize the early signs of labor, and teaches ways to help manage the pain and stress during childbirth.

What is the difference between a doula and a midwife?
There is no real difference. A doula is another name for a midwife. Many women elect to use a doula during birth because the doula will stay in the room during the entire labor process, while a medical doctor will only come in once active labor starts. A wise midwife can help guide a new mother through the contractions and relieve her pain. While home births are not as popular as they once were, many mothers are choosing to give birth to their babies at home using a midwife.

What pain medicines are used during childbirth?
For many new mothers, the prospect of giving birth for the first time fills them with joy, but also with a sense of nervousness. After all, labor is painful. There are many types of pain medication that can be given during childbirth, most inserted through the IV. However, the epidural, which numbs everything below the hips, is the most common pain medication. This pain medication is injected into the spinal fluid to help stave off the worst pains from contractions during labor.

Pregnant women and their significant others often take childbirth classes to learn about the birthing process and ways to relax throughout. Some women hire midwives to help with pregnancy and childbirth. Midwives are professionals trained in taking care of a woman during pregnancy, labor and delivery. Midwives are usually women, and typically operate outside of traditional hospital settings. Pregnant women who use midwives want extra support to help them deliver the baby naturally and in a calm environment without medical intervention if possible. Other expectant mothers simply take a certified childbirth education class in their third trimester to prepare them for labor and delivery. Some classes are ongoing and last about six to eight weeks, while other classes take place in one day over several hours. Childbirth education classes are taught by certified professionals with training in childbirth and coaching. They can provide support and assistance with the various relaxation and breathing techniques employed during labor. Your childbirth professional or specialist can also provide personal information on their own pregnancies to help moms in their classes relate to the event. Childbirth education teachers may show instruction videos of mothers delivering babies, whether vaginally or via cesarean, natural or medicated. The teacher or specialist may also show expecting mothers breastfeeding techniques. Pregnant mothers will also get advice on the latest medications and drugs available during labor. To find a childbirth education class or service, ask your doctor for more information. He or she should be able to give you contact information so you can set up your class service schedule. Look online to find parenting tips, natural birthing tips, association information, instruction classes in your area, free DVD or video samples, childbirth education license information, outreach programs, preparation tips, postpartum and prenatal advice, parenting resources, expert advice, and maternal supplies.
