Terms Related to Cleaning and Dyeing Equipment

Textiles are available in more than just the colors of the rainbow. Special equipment is often needed to achieve the desired color. A pigment can be rapidly spritzed on, or a material can be soaked for a long period of time in a dye. Following are some terms related to cleaning and dyeing equipment to help you better understand the process of making and taking care of your different fabrics.

  • Batik Dyeing – Batik dyeing allows for selective coloring of portions of fabric. The material is coated with an impenetrable substance, often wax, so that only the uncovered areas are dyed. This allows manufacturers to apply unique patterns to clothing and other items.
  • Binder – Binders are almost colorless. Producers of textiles use binders to help affix dyes to a material.
  • Bleeding – Bleeding is the running, fading, or otherwise escaping of color from a fabric. Some materials may need special equipment or a trip to the dry cleaners to retain their proper coloration.
  • Blend – This is a fabric that is made of multiple kinds of the same substance, like different types of wool, or a combination of more than one substance.
  • Colorfast – Colorfastness is the capacity of a material to retain pigmentation. Carpet, apparel, and other fabrics should be tested for colorfastness before cleaning.
  • Jig Dyeing – Jig dyeing is accomplished in a vat or other large vessel. Fabric is transported back and forth through the machine. The immersion of the fabric continues until the desired color is obtained.
  • Random Dyeing – Random dyeing is the coloring of predetermined parts of fabric or yarn. One method of accomplishing this is to place the material underneath a machine. The machine essentially shoots a rapid jet of dye. This jet of dye is carefully positioned over the fabric so that only certain sections are colored.
