Clergy

There are many types of religions and a variety of sects within those types. To better understand the various religious groups and their ideas, a familiarity with some prevalent terms may be beneficial.

  • Clergy: Referring to preachers, priests, pastors, ministers or other ordained religious leaders, the clergy takes a leadership role regarding the rituals and doctrines in religious life. Christian ministers and priests aren’t the only ones who form clergies. Clergy take a not-so-prevalent role in Judaism, though they do have the formal, priestly tribe of the Kohanim as well as rabbis, though any adult Jew can lead prayer services. Clergy appears in Islam as mufti or maulana for the Sunni tribe, as well as the Ulema, a class of Muslim scholars implementing Islamic Law.
  • Evangelist: Often known as the act of evangelism, this entails the practice of teaching religious ideas to those who don’t hold the same beliefs. The goal is to communicate beliefs and faith in order to indoctrinate others and spread religion the world over.
  • Confirmation: A rite of commencement in Christian church that occurs by anointing or the laying on of hands in prayer, bestowing the gifts of the Holy Spirit. This strengthens the bond with the church.
  • Lucifer: A common misconception in Western religion, Lucifer is not actually the devil or Satan. Early Christian writers identified Lucifer as such, but he does not appear this way in the New Testament. Lucifer refers to a passage, though it was associated as a proper name in the King James Version of the bible.
  • Original Sin: Though sin itself is often difficult to distinguish, one notion that is very prevalent is that of man falling from God’s grace after eating the forbidden fruit.
