Popular Clock Dealer Terms

Clocks are available in all sorts of sizes and styles, and while some people will want to tell time on their wrist, others may prefer a large clock that is prominently displayed in their home. Dealers who specialize in clocks will buy and sell these items at their shops. When buying an antique clock, dealers may appraise the piece to determine the proper value. Sometimes, these antique clocks may need to be repaired before they go on sale. Once the piece is on sale, dealers will provide individuals with any pertinent information about the clock and how it operates. Many different clock pieces will be available at these shops. These include both wall and floor clocks and watches.

  • Carriage - A carriage clock is a small, portable clock that is located inside a brass case and features glass sides with a decorative handle.
  • Pendulum - A pendulum is a swinging rod that will regulate clock movement within a mechanical clock.
  • Grandfather - A grandfather clock is sometimes referred to as a floor clock and stands anywhere from six to eight feet. A pendulum is located inside the large tower and elaborate carvings may be engraved around the face.
  • Dial - The dial is the face of the clock and displays the hours.
  • Quartz - Quartz clocks feature an electronic oscillator to keep track of time. A battery passes through a quartz crystal that causes it to vibrate in order to drive clock movement.
  • Anniversary - Anniversary clocks receive their name because they can run about one year without needing a battery replacement or winding.
  • Cuckoo - A cuckoo clock is a type of wall clock that displays a mechanical cuckoo and call each hour.

Clock dealers sell clocks and watches. Most dealers specialize in watches, because there tends to be more demand for watches, as opposed to clocks. This is probably because watches are a portable way to display time, which is convenient for people who work and travel. These distributors may also specialize in antique, grandfather, grandmother, or cuckoo clocks. Grandfather versions are also known as longcase pendulum clocks, and due to their size, must sit on the floor. Dealers may also repair clocks and sell replacement dials and pendulums. Early versions of time-pieces include sundials, hourglasses, water clocks, and spring powered clocks. Some were made out of wood or ceramics. However, none of those models kept very accurate time. The first digital clocks were introduced in the 1900s, and operated by flipping cards. Modern clocks and watches keep time by use of quartz crystal vibrations, with the advantage of greater accuracy and without the need to wind them up every day. Timepieces evolve quickly with technology advances and the changing needs of society. Time-piece distributors sell all types and sizes of clocks, with antique and vintage styles accumulating monetary value with each passing year. Collectors most often seem to prefer grandfather and cuckoo clocks or similar designs. Also popular are ornate or novelty wall clocks for fun or aesthetic beauty. Some time instruments are meant for hanging on walls or sitting on mantles, while others can fit on your wrist or in your pocket. Clock dealers might also purchase, appraise and repair antique timepieces.
