Clothing retail definitions

Clothing retail stores are some of the most visited retail shops in the country. They sell men, women and children clothing of all sizes and styles. There are several different types of clothing retail stores.

  • Department stores – Sometimes called general stores, these sell a large assortment of items like clothing, accessories, jewelry, and home goods. Discount department stores operate on the self-service model while high-end department stores often have tailor-made clothes and plenty of workers to offer assistance to a customer.
  • Clothing stores – Unlike department stores, this type of stores specialize in clothes. Depending on the size they may offer clothes for the entire family, or they could specialize in selling to women or men. Some clothing stores even specialize in size limits, for example, some shops market clothes for people who are taller or larger than sizes commonly found in department stores.
  • Formal stores – A type of clothing store who markets dresses, suits, jackets and pants for formal events, such as a wedding or prom. These types of stores can either stand alone or be a department within a clothing store.
  • Maternity stores - A specialized store that sells clothes for pregnant or nursing women.
  • Sports stores - Sports apparel is usually part of a larger sports department store, but there are also smaller stores that only sell sports clothing and shoes.
  • Vintage clothing stores – Usually a consignment shop specializing in secondhand clothing from the past. Like discount stores, there are good deals to be found in a vintage store.

Apparel serves a number of purposes. Shoes keep your feet protected when walking on pavement or grass. Jackets protect you from freezing wind chills. Pants and long-sleeve shirts keep the sun from burning your skin. It's also simply appropriate in most situations wear items that cover a part of your body. Maternity shorts and pants fit the growing waistline. Sports gear allows athletes to stretch and move with ease. Whether you need juniors', women's or men's designs, head to your nearest mall or shopping center. Clothing stores sell used, vintage, and new apparel and accessories for women, men, and children. Colors, patterns, and sizes vary. Save money by shopping at the end of a season. For example, if you buy summer clothes when fall begins, prices are sharply discounted. You often save 50 to 80 percent. Most shops strive to sell their inventory by the end of a season. Items that don't sell take up space in the warehouse or storeroom. Damaged or stained items are also sold at huge discounts. For this reason, most shops discount shoes, clothing, and accessories to entice customers into buying it. At the end of winter, jackets, gloves, and boots usually sell for more than half their retail price. You'll get great brand name fashions for little money. Buy swimwear late into the summer when most public pools and beaches are at the end of their season. You'll find deals on shoes, jeans, and shirts year round. Suits, prom dresses, and formal outfits usually only stay fashionable for one year. After that, discounts are applied in the hopes of making room for new inventory. Retailers sell the clothing in sizes you need. Check clearance racks before making a full price purchase. It's easy to find huge deals without having to go online.
