Community Service Agency Terms

If you are interested in volunteering to do some community service, there are several local organizations that would welcome the opportunity to work with you. Whether you decide to work with children, the homeless, substance abusers or the elderly, here are some important terms with which to become familiar. Becoming educated about the volunteer field will allow you to see if it is a good fit for you.

  • Non Profit - Many community service agencies are either publicly funded or non profit organizations. If you work for a non profit, it does not mean that no one gets paid for their work, but it simply means that surplus goes back into the furthering of their community charity programs. Non profit organizations focus on helping and bettering people within a community. Some may be focused on reforming substance abusers, educating others on mental health issues, assisting seniors or providing youth programs.
  • CSA - A community service agency is often referred to as a CSA. If you're working with a CSA, it means that the facility offers tangible assistance to the public.
  • CSP - If you work for a community support program, you may not be working directly with the public. Rather, you will be doing more behind-the-scenes assisting.
  • Human Resources - When referring to something within your organization, human resources describes the office in charge of payroll, hiring, and other basic information. When referring to a project, it may refer to manpower.
  • Community Outreach - Your agency may participate in community outreach, which affords you the opportunity to volunteer to work directly with the public. This can include information dissemination, checking on those with assisted living needs, or running youth groups.

Sometimes, it feels good to volunteer and help out people in your community. A community service agency is set up to connect volunteers and donors to those in need. There are a variety of social services provided by these organizations, including assisted living for seniors, youth services, and other public aid. Most people probably don't consider community service to be a high priority, but the volunteers at these organizations serve as a sterling example of human compassion. The community service agency provides a safe, clean facility for the homeless, so that they can be sheltered from the weather and have a bite to eat. In a nutshell, these non profit organizations are designed to help people who have fallen on hard times or who are otherwise in need of help. There are other important services that a community service agency might provide, including affordable housing for a low-income family, mental health counseling, and aid for elderly abuse victims. The community service center requires outside funding for its operations, but as a charity, it can turn around and provide needed programs for those who are less fortunate. It's painful to think of all the children who are worried about where and when they'll get their next meal. It hurts to think about whole groups of people who have nowhere to go to get warm, or to take a shower. It is for these basic human dignities that the community service agency – a non profit organization with only the best interest of its clients at heart – serves as an integral part of any urban community. For more information, and to donate or volunteer, look for a community service agency in your area via a Web search or the phone book.
