Popular Compressed Air and Gas Terms

Compressed gasses such as air and other natural gasses have become a popular way to warm a home, fire up a barbecue grill, or use an impact wrench to tighten the lugs on your car. These gasses, which are typically stored in cylindrical tanks, play a wide and diverse role in our everyday lives. In order to have a better understanding of the compressed air and gas industry, it's important to understand the terminology associated with it. Below are several terms to be familiar with when researching compressed air and gas retailers.

  • Compressor - A compressor is comprised of several parts. These include, a tank and a valve assembly. It is a pump or other machine used to reduce volume and increase pressure of a gas in order to condense the gas. The compressed gas can then be used to drive pneumatically powered machinery, etc. It is generally electric powered.
  • AC - AC stands for Alternating Current. It is an electric current that repeatedly changes its direction or strength, usually at a certain frequency or range of frequencies. The term is also used to describe alternating voltages.
  • Centrifugal Blower - A centrifugal blower is a blower unit that uses multiple fan blades rotating around a shaft to draw air in and along the shaft.
  • After Dryer Filter - A device used downstream of a dryer in a compressed air drying systems, often used for preventing the downstream migration of fine particles.
  • LNG - LNG stands for Liquefied Natural Gas. It is cooled down in order to condensate at -258F, thus converting the gas into liquid.
  • LNP - LNP stands for Liquefied Petroleum Gas. It is comprised of propane, propylene or propene, isobutane, butane, and butylene or butene. It is gaseous under normal atmospheric conditions, but liquefied by cooling and or compression.

Air and gas compressors are necessary in a variety of industries, such as industrial and mechanical applications. These mechanical devices increase or decrease the pressure of air and gas within machinery or other components. However, like any other item, they can wear out or require replacement. Businesses that go through many compressors on a regular basis would be wise to buy from distributors that specialize in air and gas compressors. These dealers tend to offer bulk discounts when customers buy large quantities at once. How do air compressors work? Similar to pumps, they act as conduits for transporting either fluid or air. Think of scuba diving equipment, which has tanks and valves to regulate high and low pressure. The whole process involves pistons, pumps, and even motors in some cases. Distributors may sell a wide range of these compressors with options including reciprocating, vertical air, rotary screw, and portable compressors. Powered either by oil and gas engines or electric motors, compressors of all kinds serve many uses. Depending on the need, compressors can be purchased fairly cheaply in bulk quantities. Centrifugal compressors, for example, involve radial flow work absorbing turbo-machinery. Also called radial compressors, these products operate with pumps, fans, and blowers. Rotary screw compressors, on the other hand, operate on gas and use screws to compress the gas. Some are portable, while others are fixed. Because some types of compressors can get expensive, many companies offer used compressors to save customers money. Consumers can head to the internet to learn about all types of compressors, such as high pressure oil-free or natural gas compressors. Manufacturers can be found this way, as well as within the phone book.
