Important Computer Hardware Terms

As technology plays a larger role in society, computer hardware has evolved into an essential element in the day-to-day life of many people. These components and supplies keep your desktop running quickly and efficiently. Here are some key terms regarding these elements.

  • BIOS – This is the term for the basic input/output system that is installed on your PC. It controls most basic operations, like booting up and initializing hardware.
  • Bus Speed – This technology measures how fast the central processing unit can run in megahertz. Higher quality memory supplies better bus speeds for most units.
  • CPU – This equipment is the control center for your PC. It carries the instructions for utilizing the BIOS to perform four basic functions which are fetch, decode, execute and write back instructions for operating the system.
  • Hard drive – This stores most of the information, including your operating system and software on the computer. A problem with the this may mean that all text documents, pictures and applications could be lost on your laptop or desktop.
  • Megabytes – These measure the available amount of space on a hard drive. One megabyte is one million bytes and is often used as the standard of measurement for file sizes. Most come in gigabytes, which is a unit of one thousand, twenty-four megabytes.
  • Motherboard – This is the system of transfer for all data in the computer. The processor and all other essential components are located here.
  • RAM – This is the element that holds data that has been recently accessed by the user, like software or applications, allowing quick access to it if needed.
