Popular Computer Networking Terms

Whether it's in a home or office, computer networks are installed to connect individuals to the outside world. Communication to the outside world takes place through the Internet, and a network allows individuals to send data, browse Web pages and chat. Computer support specialists are responsible for setting up these networks and must have an understanding of how to install and maintain the equipment used in the field. Types of equipment will include monitors, keyboards, routers, modems and cables.

  • Bandwidth - Bandwidth is the amount of information that can be passed through an Internet connection. Bandwidth is measured in bits per second. For instance, large files, like videos, require a larger bandwidth.
  • Computer Hardware - Computer hardware are the physical items that are used in networking. This includes the computer, modems, routers and fiber optic cables.
  • Virus - A virus is a program that is loaded onto a computer without the user knowing and will replicate itself to cause security problems.
  • Access Point - The access point is the connection location where users of a wireless device connect to the local area network, also known as LAN.
  • Operating System - An operating system is responsible for running the programs on a computer. For example, an operating system will locate and save files and send data to a printer.
  • Local Area Network - A local area network connects computers that are in the same office or building. This allows employees to share information with each other through a wireless connection.
  • Bluetooth - Bluetooth is radio technology that is able to connect with an electronic device without using a wire or cable.

Computer networking is often used in homes and offices to allow for communication between different computers. Networks allow computer users to share information such as programs, company documents, other software and sometimes even hardware. This process of communication is often done by wireless networks, and these services will also set up security programs and hardware for these networks in both home and office settings. Computer networking service companies often do more than just setup. They can also usually help in the setup of office computer equipment and other technology, as well as provide software installation on home computers. Some companies will only specialize in office networking for big companies while others will provide services for the home. Some may specialize in local area networks or LAN setup so a group of computers can share and route files, data, and other information. Other networking services have specialists who deal more with the hardware of networking such as switches, optical cabling, Bluetooth devices, and Ethernet equipment. Many of these companies primarily advertise online and often design the sites themselves so this is a great place to find more information about what these companies do. Most of these companies provide wireless networking and security software and hardware, but to find out exactly what computer networking services are the best place to start is online. Computer networking services provide offices, homes, and even large companies with services - from hardware installation to security programs for their networks in and out of the office. Having a network means easy access to shared files, and the security will keep other people from obtaining this information and data.
