What is a Consignment Shop?

Consignment shops are a great way to buy secondhand, slightly used items at a discounted price. They operate as an outlet where consumers can bring items they want to sell that the store will buy. Often these items are high-end designer clothes or collectible antiques. A consignment store is different from a thrift store because in a thrift store the items are often donated and therefore at a lower quality than a consignment store. The following are a list of terms that describe the different kinds of consignment stores you may come across.

  • General Consignment Stores - Most consignment shops sell gently used men, women, children and baby clothing as well as accessories such as shoes and jewelry. You can often find good deal on baby, maternity and children clothes, as those are usually not as worn as other types of clothing.
  • Bridal stores- For a bride on a budget, consider a consignment shop as a great outlet for bridal wear. They will often have wedding dresses, ring bearer pillows, bridesmaid gowns and tuxedos for cheap. A further bargain is, after you wear the dress, provided it is still in good condition you can resale it to the consignment store.
  • Boutique stores – Niche consignment stores that often specialize in one item or one brand, such as designer clothes or jewelry.
  • Antique stores – Items from the past that have held up well over time are sold here. Often you can find great deals on secondhand furniture with a great sense of style.

    Some people frequent consignment shops to save money; others do it to not only save money but to adopt a unique vintage look. You may have to head back there every week to find just the bargain you’re looking for, but consignment shops may have the treasures you’re been seeking. Perhaps you know them as thrift shops, but whatever you call them, buying on consignment can be easy on your wallet. These second-hand resale stores stock anything from clothing and accessories to toys and books. People sell their used merchandise to consignment shops, such as outgrown baby clothing. The store then puts them on consignment, which means the seller gets a percentage of the price tag when someone buys the items. Consignment shops may be crowded with bargains, but the merchandise can change on a daily basis. The bridal or prom gown you wanted yesterday may not be there tomorrow; same thing with that secondhand play kitchen set for your kids. Collectibles, boutique furniture, jewelry, and shoes can all be had at a steal. Buy outlet antique clothes at low prices, too. You never know what you’ll find of value. Consignment shops may feature brand names on designer clothing, or they may have a lot of generic brand clothing as well. Buying used can save you a ton of money, and most consignment shops have rules as to what they will sell. The used clothing you donate or sell to such shops for resale must be relatively stylish, have all buttons and zippers intact, and be free of stains and rips. Most thrift or secondhand shops sell items for men, women, and children, whether designer brands or lesser known brands. Purchase outlet antique clothes to become part of your wardrobe, or pick up some vintage pieces of jewelry.
