Popular Engineering and General Contracting Terms

Construction contractors and engineers are responsible for planning and executing a variety of building and manufacturing projects. Whether you have a large commercial project or a small home remodeling task that you need help with, an engineer or general contractor can help. The following are a few common terms used to describe different types of engineering professionals and construction contractors.

  • Civil Engineer – A civil engineer is a specialist in the planning, construction, and maintenance of public projects and urban structures. They work on designing bridges, dams, buildings, and roads and managing their construction. They are sometimes involved in city planning efforts and other government projects.
  • Electrical Engineer – Electrical engineers are professionals who design and test electrical systems and electronic devices. They work on projects involving electric power plants, wiring homes and commercial buildings, telecommunications, and the design of industrial machinery.
  • Mechanical Engineer – A mechanical engineer is an expert on designing and improving machinery. Mechanical engineers may work on engines, robots, industrial equipment, or power tools. They often go through intensive college programs before seeking a license to work in the field.
  • Aeronautical Engineer – Aeronautical engineers deal with the construction of airplanes and spacecrafts. They are experts on the physics involved in flight and the conditions a plane or spacecraft is subject to during its flight. They make sure these crafts are safe and stable, while balancing the building costs.
  • General Contractor – On a construction site, a general contractor oversees the progress of the project and manages the workers. Also, they are often responsible for locating materials and hiring the different subcontractors and trades people needed to complete work.

General engineering contractors are necessary people to have on site when designing, planning, constructing, and overseeing a construction project of any kind. These professionals lend their expertise when it comes to general components of a project, from water and electric to drains and pavement. Such companies can comprise civil and structural engineers who have construction and contracting experience. They may hire experts as needed to complete specialty areas of a project to augment their services. General engineering contractors make sure the right materials are ordered and utilized, and make sure projects come in at or under budget. They also make sure all work is up to code. Typically, general engineering contractors plan, design, construct, and excavate all sorts of structures, such as buildings and bridges. They may also be involved in projects with roadways, levees, dams, canals, and natural wetlands. A background in environmental engineering or environmental or natural consulting is helpful in the latter case. Many work on a commercial, industrial, or municipal basis, providing sub-terrain basement excavation or coastal surveying for a community. Contractors may have backgrounds in science, business, engineering, hydraulics, and environmental concerns, depending on what they primarily offer. Some have more experience in resource development for urban projects, while others have more experience on suburban or residential projects. General engineering contractors typically work on fixed works projects, such as those involving parks, power plants, airports, and streets. They have specialized knowledge of a range of areas, including flood control, leveling, trenching, transportation, structures, and surface work. Often there are teams made up of several professionals each with their own expertise.
