Residential Contractors Terms to Know

Home improvements can be a major undertaking. Whether doing basic repairs, remodeling, or building an addition, hiring a contractor helps ensure that the job is done right. In addition to design and construction, contractors can help with navigating local regulations. A working knowledge of terminology can be useful in hiring a residential contractor.

  • Pedestal Sink - A type of sink with the basin mounted to a slender stand. There is no counter top surrounding a pedestal sink. These are popular for bathrooms with a classic, traditional aesthetic.
  • Vanity Sink - A type of sink with the basin set into a counter. The plumbing requirements are different for a vanity sink than a pedestal sink. Planning with the general contractor before building the bathroom ensures the appropriate type of plumbing for the chosen sink design.
  • Back Splash - The area immediately behind the sink designed to contain splashes. These protect walls and keep them from becoming stained. Some people may choose not to install a back splash, and instead paint the wall with a waterproof type of paint.
  • Aluminum Wiring - A type of electrical wiring common in older houses. This kind of wiring can present a fire hazard. If possible, it should be replaced entirely when doing repairs or remodeling.
  • R-Value - A rating for how efficient insulation is. Selecting insulation with a higher R-value when building a house or adding an addition can save quite a bit of money on heating. Homes in warmer climates do not require as much insulation as homes in colder areas. A general contractor can assist in selecting an appropriate R-value.
  • Chinking - Using smaller pieces of insulation to fill gaps between insulation bats. This leads to an improvement in the effectiveness of the insulation.

When homes need to be remodeled or newly constructed, residential contractors are the ones called in for the job. These professionals provide all aspects of a residential construction job, such as electrical wiring, design, drywall, and plumbing. They are certified construction professionals with experience in repair, home improvements, additions, and building renovations. Residential contractors generally only work on houses and similar dwellings, as opposed to commercial contractors who work on a larger scale for cities and large companies. Typically, many residential contractors work together at once on a project, each with different specialties that contribute to the success of the job. One may be skilled in roofing repair, while another may be skilled in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) installation. General contractors are the professionals who provide management of the entire project, directing sub contractors as needed and making sure the project meets the budget and is up to code. Many people are needed to bring a remodeling, home improvement, or new building project to fruition. Contractors often work with engineers and architects on a daily basis as well. Residential contractors may work for themselves or for a construction company. Others work for municipal public works departments. They often advertise their services in the local paper, online, or through business cards and fliers in town halls, libraries, post offices, and home improvement stores. General contractors are generally happy to provide free quotes and estimates, and many submit bids regularly for city and state jobs. Licensed residential contractors can provide services for a house's interior or exterior, depending on the client's needs. A construction company may demonstrate a range of talents centered on painting, concrete foundations, basement finishing, and bathroom remodels.
