Kitchens should include more than just the basic pots and pans. There are utensils and cookware to help with essentially every kitchen task. While almost no one will require multitudes of baking and cooking utensils, there are many that can aid anyone in the kitchen. Following are some terms to help you bring out your inner chef.

  • Baster – Basters are tubular shaped utensils with a rubber or plastic ball on one end. Depressing the ball creates suction in the tube, which can be used to remove liquids from pots or pans. This liquid can then be drizzled back over the food to prevent it from drying out.
  • Box Grater – Graters are used for shredding food products. Box graters have four different sized graters on them, providing more versatile use than traditional graters.
  • Cake Tester – This wire utensil is used to see if a cake is finished baking.
  • Colander – A colander is a round piece of equipment with holes in the bottom. Colanders are used to separate a liquid from a solid. They are particularly useful in draining pasta from the water it was cooked in.
  • Cutlery – Cutlery is a general term for knives that are not crafted by hand.
  • Dessert Servers – These flat, wedge shaped appliances are ideal for portioning out pies and other desserts.
  • Parat – Parats are large circular plates with lips on the edges. They are mostly used by bakers when kneading dough.
  • Whisk – A collection of wires, usually shaped like a balloon, that are used for thoroughly mixing liquids. This cookware is a necessary tool for any chef.

    To become an expert at cooking, the first step is to learn your way around the kitchen. Every cooking project includes a specific set of utensils to help you get the job done. If you are making hard boiled eggs for breakfast, an egg timer and set of skimmers, or slotted spoons, will help retrieve the eggs from water. If you are frying eggs, you’ll need a spatula to get the eggs from the pan to your plate. If baking is more your forte, you may need to incorporate spatulas, wooden spoons, blenders and whisks. Those ingredients won’t mix and serve themselves! You’ll need a can opener to get to that store-bought filling. When you’re done, you’ll want a tray to display your sweets on and a knife to cut them. To make a good stew or soup, you need a cauldron and cutting board to chop all the ingredients. You may choose a plastic or wooden board depending on your preference. You’ll also want a ladle. A ladle is a long spoon with a deep bowl perfect for scooping soup into bowls. There might be more utensils for grilling and cooking meat than anything else. To season your meat you can use everything from a basting brush to a syringe, and you’ll need cutters to get your meat sliced and ready for the grill. If you are making kebabs you will need sticks to put your meat and vegetables on, and if you are grilling up fillets you’ll want tongs on hand to flip them when they are ready. While it’s not pressing to stock your kitchen with every kind of cookware, you should start with the basics like pots and pans, and work your way from there.
