Popular Terms for Cosmetic Surgery

Choosing to undergo cosmetic surgery can be a big decision, especially depending on the procedure. With so many different surgeries available, it is important to take time to research the field of reconstructive surgery, as well as the surgeon you are considering using. The more time and effort you put in to your research, the more comfortable you can be knowing that you are minimizing the risks that come with any operation. Consider the terms below to help you get started.

  • Plastic Surgery - This field includes any form of reconstructive surgery. Though the most common use of plastic surgery is cosmetic, it an also include treatments for burn victims, hand surgery, and more.
  • Rhinoplasty - This is a procedure that allows the patient to change the form of his or her nose. It can be used to correct problems like a deviated septum, or can be performed simply for aesthetic reasons.
  • Liposuction - This operation allows for the reduction of fat in different parts of the body. The surgeon most commonly performs this operation on the thighs or tummy, removing fat through suction.
  • Breast Augmentation - For this procedure, physicians enhance a woman's bust size by adding implants underneath the skin. There are a few different types of breast implants, such as saline, silicon, or ones made from other compositions. This is one of the most well-know reconstructive operations.
  • Rhytidectomy - This is more commonly referred to as a facelift. It is an operation that allows the patient to look younger by removing skin and tightening up facial tissue. Non-surgical options include the use of injections or laser treatments.

If you’re unhappy with your appearance, you can elect to have cosmetic surgery to alter a body part or parts. This can also be used if you need reconstructive surgery due to an accident or birth defect. From rhinoplasty to liposuction, cosmetic surgery is an option for those who need work done. Skilled cosmetic and plastic surgeons can perform these procedures either on an in-patient basis, such as with injections to fill in wrinkle lines, or within a clinic or hospital, such as with major surgeries like tummy tucks and implants. Breast reductions, eyelid lifts, and penis enlargements are all possible using various methods and equipment such as lasers. Dental work can also be performed. Sometimes these doctors are primarily dentists, but they can also be cosmetic surgeons skilled in reconstructing the jaw, for instance. Some people opt to enlarge and augment areas of their bodies, such as buttocks and breasts, with silicone injections. Others want to minimize body parts, such as noses and other facial features. All surgery has its complications, not the least of which is possible death. It’s a good idea to first consult with your primary care physician for a referral to a respected area cosmetic surgeon. Since the risks are great, it’s important to consult with a surgeon with many years of experience and credibility. Face lifts, tummy tucks, and breast implants all carry their own procedures, risks, financial plans, and outcomes. Fully researching these is key, through independent research and consultations with the doctor. Plastic surgery in this country really came into popularity after the wars in the 20th century, with many soldiers wounded with facial and head injuries opting for reconstructive procedures.
