Specialties Within Domestic Violence Counselors

Domestic violence is a serious and growing problem in our community. If you need help dealing with a violent situation at home, you should contact a counselor immediately to get the facts about abuse. Domestic violence was only recently recognized as a criminal activity. This national recognition has made help and counseling much more readily available to victims. If you are seeking help from a domestic violence counselor, you may hear him or her use some of the following terminology.

  • Battered Women's Shelter - A type of home where battered women can flee to escape their abusers. Shelters provide support groups, facts and counseling. Most shelters will even accommodate a woman's younger children if she is a victim. Shelters often maintain a secret location so that abusers cannot hunt down their victims.
  • Cycle of Violence - Abusers were often abused themselves as children. When you abuse your children, you are teaching them to use violence to get their way. The facts suggest that children raised in abusive households are more likely grow up to be abusers. This is an alarming statistic.
  • Survivor's Guilt - The statistics also show that children from an abusive home experience what is known as survivor's guilt. If only one child in a household is abused, the others may feel guilty for not sharing in that pain. There are centers and support groups specifically aimed at helping children with survivor's guilt. They can provide more thorough information.
  • Signs of Abuse - Bruising, cuts, broken bones and a withdrawn personality are tell tale signs that someone could be a victim of abuse.
  • Mental Abuse - People can often be abusive without even raising their fists. They make men, women and children feel trapped or controlled through pure mental manipulation. Mental abusers often prevent their victims from living their own lives.

Domestic violence counselors are professionals who provide therapy to men, women, and children who are abused. These anger management therapists also aid abusers with proper counseling. After all, the right therapy and support is often required to promote mental and physical health. Sometimes, a resource such as a battered women's shelter is also crucial when there is violence in the home. In the end, getting the right advice, support, counseling, and help is the key. For those who are unaware, domestic violence counselors work with all sorts of clients. While one may be a wife seeking aid from the physical abuse of her husband, another may be a man who needs help with his partner's anger issues. There are children who are victims as well. This is when counseling sessions are truly imperative. Maybe the child is receiving harassment from a peer, or maybe the child's parent has anger management issues. A licensed counselor or therapist can provide the advice and support needed to remedy these physical and mental abuse problems, regardless of where they started, and how long they have been going on. However, it is important to seek out domestic violence aid quickly. There are likely a few therapists and counselors in your town or city. Some of these surely deal with domestic violence, spouse issues, and child abuse. It is a good idea to get in touch with these professionals if you wish to learn more about this field, and all it offers. You may even find it helpful to contact more than one abuse counselor.
