Craft Instruction Terminology

Craft instruction classes are short lessons offering informational tips and ideas for the art and hobby of crafting. Craft are sometimes done as activity projects in schools, such as making a small Christmas tree ornament around the holidays. Other more in-depth activity projects are often offered at kids’ camps. Some recreational centers even offer craft instruction lessons for adults. The key to making a successful crafting project is to simplify the steps to make the process as easy as possible so that kids can understand it. Below are some common terms used for craft instruction.

  • Medium – An art term often used in art or craft classes to describe the material the artist is going to be working with. For example, jewelry making has several mediums, such as beads or metals, while painting is often done with oil on canvas.
  • Mixed-Medium – Many craft lessons use mixed-medium art projects. This term refers to art that is produced using different mediums, such as inks, paints and digital art.
  • Bristol Board – Thick, machine-finished paperboard that is often used for teaching drawing and painting with watercolors.
  • Pottery – Pottery classes involve working with water and clay to create objects like sculptures. Pottery includes earthenware, porcelain and stoneware.
  • Calligraphy - The art of artistic handwriting.
  • Gouache Painting – Gouache paint is similar to watercolors, but it has more chalk in the mixture, making for steadier, brighter colors than simple watercolors. It is not as easy to work with as normal watercolors, however, and is usually reserved for sincere watercolor artists.
  • Oil Painting – Many children are exposed to painting with watercolor paints at a young age. Oil painting is often reserved for older children and adults. Classes teach proper use of oil paints, brush techniques and color mixing.

Crafts are fun pastimes for both young and old alike. Kids enjoy spending time making crafts, whether it involves simple coloring at home or creative art projects at school. Many teens and adults love to scrapbook, which is a compilation of scraps of memories, like photos and journal entries, arranged decoratively within an album. Crafts can entail making easy holiday decorations out of foam stickers and patterns, or it can involve bead making or painting. Many people strive to excel at crafts, to decorate for Christmas, to send cards to friends, or just to make collages for fun. Students can take classes in a school through informative courses, or through local community centers. Even retail craft stores offer classes by craft instructors, either for free or for a specified cost. Craft instruction can even be found online, with detailed steps informing readers how to use a glue gun to make creations, or how to use stamps to create a well organized scrapbook page. Kids enjoy learning, and they love crafts. Craft instruction puts these two passions together, making for a fun learning environment. They can learn simple craft techniques in school, using available materials and equipment. Children can also visit an art studio to take more detailed lessons on particular art forms, such as ceramics or drawing. Teachers can advise on various artistic methods and techniques, offer new projects and ideas for brainstorming purposes, and allow students to take home the masterpieces they've created. Whether you're interested in fun crafts to do with your kids at home, or whether you yourself want to perfect a specific craft, such as Christmas ornaments, there are many resources available. Art classes in school are often all that is needed to inspire creativity in children, with easy-to-follow craft instructions for making anything from beads to pottery.
