Dancing Supply Terms

Dancing is a popular way to exercise and to have fun. Professional dancing also requires a good deal of time, supplies and effort. If you were interested dancing professionally you need professional dancing supplies, whether they are elaborate costumes for performances, or a pair of sturdy ballet shoes. Below are some popular dance supply terms that are used in traditional forms of dance such as ballet, tap and ballroom.

  • Ballet Shoes – Ballet dancers require special kinds of shoes. For beginners these shoes closely resemble slippers and can be bought at any dance supply store. Professional ballerina shoes cost a good deal more. They have an elongated toe area that has to be well supported and usually each shoe has to be custom made to fit the foot.
  • Tap Shoes – Worn for tap dancing, these are often black shoes, but they can be any color. They have thick metal pads on the heel and toe that allows the shoes to make a sharp tap when they hit the studio floor, thus giving the dance its name.
  • Leotard – A snugly fitting piece of clothing somewhat similar to a one piece bathing suit that is usually made of nylon. A leotard fits around the torso and lets the arms and legs move freely for dancing without any restrictions. Wearing a leotard is often required for ballet classes and dance supply stores often sell them.
  • Tutu – A piece of fabric worn around the waist that usually hangs either to the hips or the knees. They can be made out of muslin, nylon or tulle. Wearing a tutu is a required part of the outfit for ballet performances. They can also be different shapes, from the bell tutu to the pancake tutu depending on the costume requirements.

Dancing is an entertaining way of conveying self-expression or having fun with your friends. As serious dancers or as students taking a class for a great workout, we have all, at some point or another, dealt with dancing supplies. Dancing supplies encompass every style of dance, from classical ballet to jazz to hip-hop. Dancing costumes first began to appear in the 16th century, when modern ballet began to take shape and form. Over time, there has become standard apparel for this particular style of dance including a leotard, tights, and specifically designed ballet slippers. During a performance, the apparel becomes more elaborate. The dancers may wear complex skirts, tutus, and pointe slippers. Dancing supplies in stores are often connected to the dance studio itself. Depending on the style of dance the studio teaches, the apparel and accessories will vary. For instance, the types of shoes and dresses available for ballroom dancing are dramatically different from a store that sells tap shoes or belly dancing costumes. Dance apparel stores can be found outside of dance studios as well, stocking basic supplies for most styles of dance. Online stores are another way to find tap shoes, legwarmers, ballroom dresses, elastic headbands, and special name brands. Some stores specialize in children's dance apparel, while others carry both child and adult sizes. They even stock accessories like decorated tutus, special dancing slippers, and much more available by delivery. Regardless of whether you are ordering a new pair of tights for jazz class, or ordering a skirt for belly dancing, you should feel comfortable and inspired by your dancing apparel and supplies.
