Key Terms Relating to Nurseries and Child Care

When you decide you need a nursery or day care for your child, you will need to contemplate a few options that you have. If you are looking for a place that your child can play and nap all day while you work, there are options that will teach your child while also allowing them time to play. Some centers are regulated by the state government, which would require the employees to be certified. Whether you are trying to find a school for a young child or an older one for school preparation, familiarize yourself with the following key terms before you start looking for a day care center.

  • Nontraditional Hours - Any time that is between 6 PM and 7 AM. Some day care facilities may only operate during morning and afternoon hours. Other centers will be available, but will likely charge a higher fee for anything during nontraditional hours.
  • Subsidy - A type of financial assistance that is provided to low income families to pay for day care. This gives the adult members of the family the opportunity to work and not have to work about a babysitter.
  • Nursery School - This is a child care program that watches children for less than three hours per day. This is an option similar to preschool. This type of center may not have the same requirements to be licensed or certified through the state.
  • In-Home Care - This is any type of child care that is provided out of a person's household. Traditionally this occurs if you find a friend or relative who will watch your baby while you are at work.

Day nurseries and child care are special facilities where parents can drop off their children to be monitored and cared for while they are at work. In this day and age, it is difficult for parents to wait until their child reaches kindergarten or elementary school age before they return back to the office. Many times parents need to seek care for their kids while they are still babies or toddlers because they need to return to work. Although it may be difficult to trust your infant or toddler in the care of another, it is important to find nurseries that you feel comfortable with. Daycare centers come in both private for-profit or non-profit free types. While some people argue that all education schools and care centers for babies and kids should be subsidized or at least tax free, others enjoy the privileges of having private nurseries and day cares. These schools can be in a home of a professional that has a Child Development Associate credential or they may also be in the form of a preschool with teachers, tutors, and toys so children can play. Before committing your child or infant to a care facility, consider accessing your favorite search engine to do some research on the topic. Type in related keywords such as toddler education, daycare licensing, or child development care. It is important to be up to date about various laws and regulations, that the different types of day care centers need to be up to code with, before choosing where your baby will spend his or her day care. You may even find that some facilities offer nanny cam surveillance. It is important to choose wisely because the development your child receives at this facility may follow him or her to elementary, middle, and high school.
