Understanding Terms Used by Dermatologists

Dermatology doctors diagnose and treat skin problems. A dermatologist checks over your entire body looking for unusual growths that signify the presence of diseases like melanoma cancer. They also help clear acne, soothe rosacea, and help prevent the signs of aging. When you visit this professional, you may hear terms you don't understand. Learn some of those terms before your appointment.

  • Acne – When oils clog pores, whiteheads and blackheads create pimples that create unsightly bumps and pimples. Using special lotions and medications, the doctor helps eliminate the spots you get. The expert offers advice into the best makeup and facial masks to use to help prevent and clear up break outs.
  • Benign – Benign moles or growths are non-cancerous and generally pose no problem. Your dermatologist can remove them, but many insurances will not pay for the removal because they feel the removal is strictly a cosmetic procedure.
  • Laser – Many dermatology procedures use lasers to minimize scarring. The laser removes damaged layers of tissue revealing newer, healthier skin. Lasers are used to remove sun spots, wrinkles, and other unattractive issues.
  • Melanoma – Melanoma is a cancer that is deadly if the disease goes untreated. It's usually signified by moles with very uneven edges that bleed or that have a black appearance. Removal of these tumors in a surgery is important to your health.
  • Rosacea – This condition is caused by an overactive immune system. Your face appears red and blotchy, especially after eating certain foods or using perfumed lotions. Special medications and moisturizers help relieve the redness. Sun block is essential in people with this condition. Avoid exfoliating products and when possible use natural or organic creams.

It may not be as mainstream as other types of doctors, but there is no doubt a high demand for the services of dermatologists. Dermatology focuses on the care of as well as the treatment of diseases involved with skin. The care aspect covers a medley of cosmetic afflictions such as wrinkles, acne and rosacea among other unsightly conditions. Skin diseases number a few different things, the most infamous being melanoma—a form of skin cancer. It is the duty of a dermatologist to diagnose and treat skin conditions of their patients in a timely manner. While dermatologists are among some of the most respected medical professions, there are many other sub-fields affiliated with different specialties of skin care. Dermatolopathologists specialize in serious skin diseases, dealing with melanoma and tumor removal. These pathologists of skin concentrate on invasive surgery to remove diseased sections of skin, which they regard as organs. Cosmetic dermatologists focus on patients with severe acne, prescribing creams among other remedies. In more extreme cases, laser removal of acne blemishes may be an option if lotion products do not aid the redness or bumps. Dermatology therapists also use laser and mask remedies to help skin conditions. Therapists aim to restore to skin to its natural state while applying exfoliating facials. Encouraged by television to put on sun block and moisturize our legs, preventative care is extremely important to a thorough skincare regimen. If your makeup isn't cutting it and you need to look up a dermatologist, consult your insurance carrier for a referral—do not consult ads. Research the dermatologist online to see reviews and any new information to learn their experience on the field you need help with (ie skin cancer or acne). They’re not heart surgeons, but dermatology is the science of looking—and therefore feeling—great as well as healthy.
