Dialysis
Dialysis is a necessary procedure for those with kidney failure or disease. This process helps remove toxic substances from the blood when the kidneys are unable to perform their normal function. Also commonly needed in people with renal cancer, dialysis involves machines, tubes, and other equipment to remove excess fluid and waste products from the body. There are two types: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Hemodialysis utilizes a filter to remove excess waste products and water, while peritoneal dialysis involves a tube placed into the stomach to remove this excess. If left untreated, this backup of fluids can become toxic for the patient and cause problems. Your kidneys, of which you have two, are human organs located in the back of the abdominal cavity. Kidneys, through regulation of the body’s fluids, keeps a delicate balance going. When this basic function fails, dialysis is implemented within a hospital or clinical setting, administered by nurses and technicians. This can be achieved at home as well, with the help of aids and nurses to handle the machines, tubing, and catheters. To find out more about dialysis, turn to your health care doctor, who can advise on the type of dialysis, such as intestinal dialysis and hemofiltration, for your needs. If your doctor is associated with a hospital or medical center, he or she will probably recommend you have the procedure done there where he or she can monitor your kidney disease or failure condition. Hospital staff can provide consulting and informational services as to what to expect from the process, such as possible complications and risks, tests, dietary restrictions, and additional information on the problems associated with treatment and chronic vs. acute indications. Most insurance companies and Medicare should cover dialysis, but be sure to inquire about this information, as this treatment can get very expensive.
