Die Casting Commonly Used Terms
Die casting is a process wherein liquid metals are forced by high pressure injection into a mold in order to create three dimensional parts. Car parts, tools and other precision instruments are made by die casting. The following list of commonly used terms might help you to understand what is involved in the die casting process:

Foundry: A factory or workshop where metal is cast. Common metals are zinc, aluminum, copper, bronze, steel and cast iron.

Casting: The metalworking process wherein molten metal is poured into a mold, allowed to cool and then extracted, having taken on the shape of the mold. Casting is used in metalwork when any other method of fashioning a metal object would be considered economically prohibitive.

Forging: A metalworking technique involving the application of pressure to a metal work piece in order to achieve the desired shape. It is one of the oldest forms of metalworking, having been used by smiths as far back as the 12th century using a hammer and anvil. The hammer and anvil are still in use today.

Soldering: A welding process wherein molten metal is applied to two workpieces in order to adhere them together. This process is typically done in plumbing and electrical applications.

Alloy: The combination of two or more metal elements. This is done so that the resulting metal is either stronger, more pliable or resistant to corrosion. Bronze is a copper and tin alloy and brass is a copper and zinc alloy.

Anodizing: A process involving the coating of a metal with an oxide layer in order to prevent corrosion.

Casting is the process of making molds or casts. Castings can be made from many types of materials, include plaster, plastic, sand, metal, or aluminum. Other materials that may be used for castings are magnesium, zinc, copper, and alloy. There are many kinds of casting companies out there. Some specialize in die casting, while others specialize in body casting. Key to the casting process is the rapid hardening of the materials. Die castings suppliers and manufacturers can be found in your local phone book or by searching online directory listings. Many products, such as household items, jewelry and toys, involve casting of some sort. Production of castings involves expensive heavy machinery for operation, such as a forging machine, precision pressure process, and foundry technology. Many tools are used to produce castings as well. Casting can be relatively inexpensive and economical to perform, due to the fast production rate. Castings are put into molds and are manufactured at a high rate of speed for optimum output. The process involves pouring the liquid into a mold. The liquid soon turns hard when exposed to heat, forming a perfect mold. Die casting works in this same way. Castings are typically manufactured and produced in industrial plants and shipped to retailers. Suppliers sell the die castings to plants for a bulk discount. Many parts are involved on the machines that produce castings. Some machines use melted alloys such as aluminum to produce castings, while others used sand, plaster, or plastic. Read up on the die castings process to find out more about forging machine systems and equipment, the precision pressure process, foundry technology, commercial and industrial uses of castings, management processes, manufacturer and company processes, low pressure and high pressure, gravity mold systems, material and supplies, die casting product items, stamping, and injection.
