Die Casting Commonly Used Terms
Die casting is a process wherein liquid metals are forced by high pressure injection into a mold in order to create three dimensional parts. Car parts, tools and other precision instruments are made by die casting. The following list of commonly used terms might help you to understand what is involved in the die casting process:
Foundry: A factory or workshop where metal is cast. Common metals are zinc, aluminum, copper, bronze, steel and cast iron.
Casting: The metalworking process wherein molten metal is poured into a mold, allowed to cool and then extracted, having taken on the shape of the mold. Casting is used in metalwork when any other method of fashioning a metal object would be considered economically prohibitive.
Forging: A metalworking technique involving the application of pressure to a metal work piece in order to achieve the desired shape. It is one of the oldest forms of metalworking, having been used by smiths as far back as the 12th century using a hammer and anvil. The hammer and anvil are still in use today.
Soldering: A welding process wherein molten metal is applied to two workpieces in order to adhere them together. This process is typically done in plumbing and electrical applications.
Alloy: The combination of two or more metal elements. This is done so that the resulting metal is either stronger, more pliable or resistant to corrosion. Bronze is a copper and tin alloy and brass is a copper and zinc alloy.
Anodizing: A process involving the coating of a metal with an oxide layer in order to prevent corrosion.
