Popular Diving Equipment Terminology

Scuba diving is an underwater hobby that is enjoyed by many people on vacations. Scuba diving is more expensive than snorkeling does require purchasing or renting expensive equipment that allows the diver to swim and breathe underwater. All diving equipment should always be purchased from a qualified retailer who can answer questions, as the safety of this equipment is paramount. You don’t want something to go wrong with your air tank when you are 100 feet under water. Below are listed some common equipment terms.

  • Diving suit – A garment that is designed to protect divers from underwater elements. Similar to a wetsuit, a diving suit typically incorporates an air supply or breathing device. The thinner diving suits are more suitable for diving in warm waters. While obviously thicker, more insulated suits are essential for deep water or cold water dives, where the outside temperature of the water can easily drop to freezing.
  • Scuba Mask – A mask that is worn over the face to allow the diver to see clearly while underwater, and perhaps more importantly, it is connected to the air tank by a hose and allows the diver to breathe underwater.
  • Air Tank – A device that includes bottled air that allows a person to breathe underwater. Air tanks can be heavy, but are essential gear for scuba diving.
  • Air Regulator – A device that regulates the amount of air that passes from the air tank into the hose.
  • Diving Watch - A watch that is designed for underwater use and are resistant to water up to a certain depth. Watches feature other accessories like an elapsed time controller.
  • Fins – Large, flat gear that is worn on the feet to help a diver swim faster while using less energy. These are helpful accessories to have when swimming underwater.
