Popular Terms for DMV Services

The Department of Motor Vehicles offers a wide range of services. The specific services that the DMV offers, however, will usually depend on the offices located in your city or state. You might find that the Department of Motor Vehicles uses terms that you don’t recognize. The list below should make it easier for you to communicate with people working at the DMV so that you can get the services you need.

  • In-transit Registration – if you plan to move a car, motorcycle, or truck from one state to another, then you might need an in-transit registration. This allows you to register the vehicle in another state.
  • Work permit – a restricted driver’s license that only allows you to drive to and from your workplace. You might qualify for one of these licenses if your permanent driver’s license has been suspended.
  • Odometer – this is the name for the device in your car, truck, or motorcycle that measures how far you have driven the vehicle. You might need this info to complete certain forms.
  • CDL – stands for Commercial Driver’s License. If you use a commercial truck or similar vehicle at work, then you will need a CDL to operate the vehicle on the road. You can’t rely on a typical license. To get a CDL, you have to take a separate driving test and written exam to prove that you can operate large trucks safely.
  • Restoration – if you have a suspended license, then restoration is the process of getting a new one. Restoration can also apply to reinstating an expired registration.
