Dog Grooming Terms to Know

If you are thinking of purchasing some grooming supplies or taking your pet to a grooming service, there are some important terms and definitions with which to familiarize yourself so that you can better understand the process.

  • Carding - Before bathing or washing your cat or dog, a groomer will first clip and cut the animal's coat. This begins with something called carding, which is when the groomer removes the under coat, or smaller hairs and dander from the animal. This is often done with a special type of grooming brush.
  • Clippering - Clippering, or clipping, is what most of us might associate with dog and animal grooming. More than simply shaving the animal, clippering is performed with special tools to enhance the overall appearance and comfort of the animal.
  • Dry Bathing - For some animals that are especially frightened of the water or difficult to bathe, dry bathing supplies are an option. Groomers apply a dry shampoo product to the pet's coat. The product is then brushed out, and takes with it dirt and oils, thereby washing the dog or cat.
  • Kennel Drying - Kennel drying is a service offered by some groomers that places the animal in a cage or kennel for drying. A system of heaters and blowers warm and dry the animal uniformly and quickly.
  • Matting - Matting can occur on longer-hair pet breeds if their hair is not properly washed, brushed, and trimmed. Once a matte has formed, it must be cut out to relieve any discomfort for the animal.

Dog grooming service and supplies can be found all over the United States these days. Within the last couple of decades, the need for pet grooming has really increased. Essentially dog and/or cat owners can tote their pet to an animal salon or grooming business in a mobile carrier. This way the kennel service or boarding facility can wash the animal, brush its hair, clip its nails, and even give it a haircut. This is a great way to care for the appearance and overall health of a pet. While many dog and cat grooming businesses provide salon services for pets, they additionally supply owners with all kinds of tools and accessory items for daily pet care. Some of this equipment includes flea shampoo, mobile carriers, collars, small tubs for bath purposes, and grooming tables to be used at home. The available products and prices vary depending on the kennel, boutique, or pet salon. These animal grooming shops and services also answer questions regarding proper kitten care, small dog cages, and foods that will improve the pet's coat. Some of these stores or grooming salons even sell specialty cat and dog food and treats. You may want to visit a pet grooming business or supply store in your area to learn more about equipment and supplies used for cat or dog grooming. This will give you the chance to ask and expert any questions you may have. Be sure to address concerns you have pertaining to your cat or dog in order to get the answers you need.
