Dogs are a terrific companion and make an excellent pet. While a puppy of every breed is cute, depending on your preference and lifestyle, these animals can make great partners when hunting or keep you company while watching television. They can even provide protection and keep watch while you are sleeping or out of the house. Good hunting dogs will have strong retrieving capabilities. These include Cocker Spaniels and Labrador Retrievers. Labradors and Cocker Spaniels also have good tracking ability. Those who want a smaller dog to keep around the house may want a Yorkie or Pug. A Rottweiler or German Shepherd breed might be best for keeping a home safe. A Pitbull is another dog that can be good used as a pet and for protection. Pitbull training can begin as early as eight weeks old. While the food requirements for each type of dog may be similar, some pets may require a special diet. It's been said many times that dogs are man's best friends. There are many reasons for this, not the least of which is their loyalty. Dogs will typically stick by their owner no matter what. Depending on the breed, they can have varying personalities. One may be ornery, while another may be playful. One may be bred as an attack dog, while another will fetch anything you throw. These four-legged creatures have been around for centuries, and are most likely the ancestors of the gray wolf. These social animals lived in packs and were easily trained by humans. In the Middle Ages, dogs were seen as status symbols, and breeding began, with efforts to try and alter size, color, and personalities of dogs. Today, there are many different breeds of dogs and puppies, from Chihuahuas, Maltese, and Pomeranians to German shepherds and Labradors. They are domesticated and live comfortably in households with people. Some dogs are more suited to be around children, while others prefer quieter quarters. They make great companions for those who live alone, and can be trained to do tricks. Dogs are such an important part of people's lives that entire stores are devoted to them. Pet stores have large sections just for canines such as Retrievers, selling toys, supplies, and food. Kennels board dogs when their owners go out of town, and animal shelters have dogs of all kinds up for adoption every single day. People can adopt puppies or older dogs. Because some dogs can be feral, it's wise to stay away from any dog without a collar. Most towns have animal control departments you can call in the event you see a stray hound. Pet owners can seek out local veterinarians to keep their dog's health in check, or contact area kennels for boarding.
