Common Drive Shaft Terms
The drive shaft is designed to transmit torque from the engine to the differential. This drives the wheels in a car and gives it the ability to move forward and backward. Different types of drive shafts are used to power cars, trucks and motorcycles. Shafts work in conjunction with other parts, including the transmission and axles. In order to allow for variations in alignment, drive shafts feature universal joints. Custom built drives shafts are also made for racing vehicles. This gives these vehicles additional power and ability to reach very high speeds. Anytime a drive shaft become damaged or needs to be replaced, a mechanic will need to troubleshoot the issue and make the necessary repairs.
Front Axle - The front axle is the crossbeam that supports the weight of a car or truck.
Rear Axle - In a vehicle, the rear axle connects the rear wheels to the front wheel drive.
Constant Velocity - CV is the category of drive shaft that transfers the torque from one direction to another. CV allows a drive shaft to transmit power through a variable angle.
Universal Joint - A universal joint allows the rod to shift or bend in any direction. This joint is commonly used in a shaft and allows for a rotated motion.
Torque - Torque is a term used to describe the twisting force applied to an object.
Drivetrain - The drivetrain features all the moving components in a car. These parts include the drive shaft and transmission. Also referred to as the powertrain, this is group of components that generate power.
Gear - The gear is the part that helps transmit power to the car as it reaches higher speeds.
