Selecting the right driveway contractor

Not every contractor can pour a driveway. The construction element is very tricky, from the amount of concrete to the size of the driveway. Most contractors who do cement work, do so on an almost exclusive basis. Find out a little about the material and the process by reading the concepts below.

  • Cement - This is both a noun and a verb. As a verb it mean to hold or bind. It is more commonly used as a noun meaning the material a contractor mainly uses when creating a foundation. Specifically it is a finally ground mixture of sand, rock known as mortar that is used to bind.
  • Concrete - Mixture of various ground stone material. Usually concrete has an aggregate of different rocks such as granite, sandstone or limestone. Cement is combined with water to form a glue to bind concrete pieces. Workers then use the viscous material to pave the driveway.
  • Asphalt - Sometimes thought of as black concrete, but this is slightly false. It does provide for a solid blacktop, but asphalt is more of a sticky, oil based material that binds gravel pieces together to form the blacktop surface. Asphalt driveways require yearly maintenance that includes re-paving, re-surfacing and re-sealing.
  • Slab - Section of a concrete pad. Concrete or another aggregate is mixed and poured into a form called a slab. Workers then smooth out the surface of the driveway and seal it with a cement sealer.
  • Patio - Portion either in the front or back of a house used to extend the interior of the house into the outside. A patio is often made of concrete as asphalt would heat up too much, and is decorated with furniture.

Most homes have driveways paved with asphalt. Since driveways are installed by experts, many home owners consult with driveway construction contractors for the job. Paved driveways ensure a smooth ride for vehicles, and also provide an even playing surface for basketball, bike riding, and other recreational sports. Driveway pavers can seal, pave, repair, maintain, and install blacktop and concrete for driveways, patios, and walkways. They can either work for themselves or for large construction companies. Many specialize in residential driveways, while some also take on commercial jobs as well. Driveways, which can be made of materials like asphalt, gravel, stone, brick, or cement, take a lot of equipment to build. Services offered by paving companies include the following: custom design, catch basin repair, parking lot maintenance, remodels, crack sealing, seal-coating, repair, and pavement marking. Driveway construction professionals are often general contractors, able to oversee and perform a number of related construction duties. Sometimes driveway construction professionals work with artists and designers to come up with mosaics, intricate designs, and patterns for driveways and patios. Contractors specializing in this area offer unique takes on standard pavement themes. Residential and commercial customers who need a driveway, walkway, or parking lot paved and sealed, can check the Internet for ideas and a list of local providers. The phone book may also feature ads for local paving contractors. Consumers can also find the following information online: maintenance techniques, typical costs, design ideas, company backgrounds and specialties, warranty information, and the best green materials to use in an environmentally friendly project.
