Popular Drywall Repair and Maintenance Terms

Drywall is commonly used in the construction of residential homes and some commercial structures. As you may know, this is a type of board that is made from plaster, wood pulp, and other materials. Drywall is typically used for interior walls, and sometimes requires fixing or maintenance. Contractors use specific tools and equipment for drywall repairs and maintenance. In order to acquire a better understanding of drywall, plaster, and maintenance supplies, check out the list of terms found below.

  • Popcorn Ceiling – Also called an acoustic ceiling, this type is generally sprayed on. Although it has been used since the 1950s, it has been used less often in residential homes after the 1980s. The popcorn spray is basically just sprayed over drywall.
  • Gypsum – A soft white or gray mineral that is made from hydrated calcium sulfate. Gypsum is often used to make plaster, and can be found in drywall boards, which are used by construction contractors.
  • Corner Caps – These are also known as transition caps. They are basically installed on the corners of drywall sheets by using an all purpose joint compound. This allows for sheets of drywall to be connected.
  • Gusset – This is a metal or wooden plate that is glued, riveted, or pressed over joists. A gusset transfers stress between connected supports, and is often addressed when drywall is repaired or fixed.
  • Parapet Wall – An extension of an exterior wall that runs above or through the surface of the roof. This wall can be made from sheetrock, wood, or other materials. Sometimes this wall suffers damage, and requires maintenance to ensure the home’s stability.

Drywall, or the plaster boards that are used in the interior of your home walls and ceilings, sometimes needs to be repaired or replaced. Since drywall is a thin layer of plaster for interior spaces, it is easy to put a hole through it, whether that be from a door handle or a mislaid hammer strike when hanging a picture. Smaller holes can be easily patched, but larger ones may lead to entirely brand-new home improvement projects. Repairing or replacing drywall is also quite common when doing house remodels, since entire rooms may need to be torn out or redone. Drywall has come a long way since it was first invented in the early 1900s, but it is still prone to aging and may need to be patched or fixed up. For homeowners working on home improvement projects, they may need to tear down entire sections that have been damaged over the years. They may also require room to expand the kitchen or remodel the bathroom. For such extensive projects, allowing a general contractor to handle it may be your best bet. They have experience with taping, installation of the new plaster, matching textures to the rest of the interior, and much more. The basic maintenance of drywall fixing and repair can be done as a do-it-yourself project, or with an expert, like a handyman or a construction contractor. Small cracks in the wall or ceiling are projects that any homeowner can take on him or her self by looking up instructional videos and blogs online. They will also need to consult the local hardware store for tools, paint recommendations, and finish equipment. In the event of the entire siding falling apart, it is best to seek professional help.
