Popular Ducts and Duct Fittings Terms

Ducts are used to transfer air throughout a building. Air may be circulated for climate control, such as heating or cooling, or for environmental control, such as filtration or ventilation. Ducts may need periodic maintenance, cleaning, or other work done. Knowing common terminology related to ducts and duct fittings can aid in doing the necessary work on HVAC systems.

  • Supply Branches - Smaller ducts which branch off of a main duct to carry air throughout a building. These may be made of metal or a flexible hose.
  • Take-off - A fitting which is installed between a main duct and supply branches. It distributes appropriate volumes of air between all of the smaller branches or hoses.
  • Stack - A vertical duct running through walls. In home environments, these must be relatively narrow in size to fit in walls between rooms.
  • Duct Sealing - The process of sealing gaps or leaks in a duct system. This increases efficiency of the system. It is important to verify that the techniques and materials used for sealing fit within the system's design specifications.
  • Air Grille Plates - Covers which fit over duct outlets. These prevent objects from falling into air ducts. They can also serve as an access point for cleaning a system. They may be points at which air enters or exits the duct system.
  • Blower - The part of a system which drives the air. In furnaces, the blower is located immediately behind the heat source.
  • Air Handling Unit Housing - The case around the primary unit. This helps keep dust and debris out of the system. Access panels can be removed for cleaning out the unit as necessary.

If you work for a company that uses a lot of ducts and duct fittings, then you might need to find a distributor that can supply you with all of the round and square heating pipe ducts that you need. There are many suppliers listed on the internet and in your directory that can serve this purpose. With so many to choose from, some people have a hard time deciding which ones can give them all of the products and services that they need. By following these guidelines, though, you should be able to decide which ones suit your needs best. When you first contact the company, you should find out how much experience they have. You can do this by asking them how long they have been in business. Those with several years of experience should know more about making HVAC duct fittings, ventilation systems, pipe ducts, isolators, and heating terminals. They should also be aware of insulation cleaning supplies, air pipes and tubes made from PVC, flexible fiberglass, galvanized metal and steel, and other materials. Ask the suppliers if they have an online catalog so that you can look at all of the products that they carry. When you find a company with the duct fittings that you need, be sure to write down their contact information in case you need to contact them in the future. Ask them what levels of customer service they offer. Some of the services that you might need will also include repairs and installation for the round and square equipment that you buy. They might also guarantee the condition of their supplies.
