Popular Electric Motor Dealers and Repair Terms

Electric motors are found in everything from cars and boats, to cooling ceiling fans and furnaces. In order to have a better, more comprehensive understanding of electric motors, we must first understand the terminology dealers and repair shops use. Below are several terms one should be familiar with in order to understand electric motors, the dealers who sell them, and the repair personnel who fix them.

  • Fan - A device which creates a current of air. Air is created when a blade, or several blades attached to a central hub, begin to rotate at speed. Fans can be used to cool car engines and people, computers and other high tech equipment.
  • Volt - An SI, Internal System of Units, unit of electric potential. Also defined as the potential difference between two points on a conductor carrying a current of one ampere, when the power dissipated between these points is one watt. Many motors are measured based upon their voltage output.
  • Induction - An effect in electrical systems in which electric currents store energy temporarily in magnetic fields before that energy is returned to the circuit.
  • Turbine - Any of the various types of machinery in which the kinetic energy of a moving fluid such as water, steam, air, or some sort of combustible fuel causes a bladed rotor to rotate. Sizes of turbines vary from large to small.
  • Generator - Any device which converts one form of energy into another, like mechanical energy into electric energy.
  • Torque - Any force, or system of forces, which causes rotation. As force can be thought of as push or pull, torque can be thought of as twist. In the automotive industry, the amount of torque an automobile creates is usually measured at the wheels.

Electric motor and generator dealers are available to sell and repair the products they sell to customers, including synchronous, brushless, and induction motors. Whether it's a mechanical flaw or owners simply wanting to ensure the motor is behaving properly, engineers and mechanics can repair the motor to work just like new. Vehicles, wind turbines, and generators are just a few items that can use electric motors to run. Since many people are looking to save energy and reduce the amount of gas they use, electric motors are gaining popularity. Dealers can answer questions regarding the speed, torque, watt, and volts each type of electric motors has to see what fits their lifestyle the best. There are calculators that help owners determine how much horsepower their electric motor is doing. Electric motors are available for many different products. Vehicles, lawn mowers, and fans are just a few of the things that can be powered by electricity. AC, DC, electrostatic, and brushless motors can be fixed by mechanics with the proper tools and replacement parts. They can take apart gear, induction, and other types of motors to locate where any problems are originating from. Mechanics take into consideration other variables that may be causing the motor to not work properly when in use. To learn more about electric motors and generators, customers can speak to a dealer and learn about proper maintenance and cleaning techniques. Car dealers let customers drive an electric vehicle to get a feel for it on the open road and can let owners know the difference in repair costs an electric motor has, versus one that runs on gas.
