Common Employment Training Service Terminology

With a sometimes unstable economy, finding solid and consistent employment is an important factor. In order to have a better, more comprehensive understanding of employment training services, we must first understand the terminology associated with the industry. Below are several terms to be familiar with when researching the many employment training and services on the market today.

  • ETA - ETA stands for Employment and Training Administration. It is a Department of Labor program which assists those in the process of seeking new jobs, training, reemployment training, and even financial help during job transitions.
  • U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs - A government agency which assists veterans in all U.S. military divisions and departments with access to quality medical care, educational assistance, and vocational rehabilitation, and employment.
  • Fair Employment Practices - A general term which, in its broadest meaning, states that no company can discriminate based on race, creed, color, or national origin. The practices also protect against religious or sexual orientation discrimination. Many of the fair employment practices are enforced by local or state laws. The Federal agency, U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is the largest fair employment practices entity in the nation.
  • Temporary Agency - A temporary work agency, or temp agency is a staffing firm which finds and retains office workers, service industry workers, and laborers just to name a few. Companies, in need of short-term workers, contract with the temp agency to temporarily hire said employees without accruing the financial burden of health insurance or other benefits. Temporary employees are also used in work that is cyclical in nature and that requires frequent adjustment of staffing levels.
