Common Diesel Engine Terms

Diesel engines are an internal combustion engine where fuel oil is burnt. The oil is burnt by heat that is produced from air compression. This type of fuel is used to power large trucks, buses and marine vessels. Types of marine vessels include ships and high-powered boats. Trucks that have diesel engines have a number of advantages over gasoline engines, including better reliability and longer life span. Diesel engines have a 4-stroke combustion cycle. These strokes include intake, compression, combustion and exhaust. Diesel fuel is heavier and more oily when compared to gasoline and evaporates at a slower rate.

  • Generator - A generator is a device that will convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. A diesel generator will automatically be activated if power is cut.
  • Fuel Pump - Fuel pumps used in diesel engines are designed to inject the liquid into the cylinder at high pressure.
  • Nitrous Oxide Emissions - Nitrous oxide emissions are found in diesel engine exhaust gas. These emissions are a result of gas temperature and pressure during the combustion. For environmental purposes, it's important to keep emissions as low as possible.
  • Turbocharging - Turbocharging is a method to increase the pressure in the diesel engine's cylinder for additional power.
  • Diesel Particulate Matter - Diesel particulate matter are particles found in exhaust. These particles may harm the environment and include soot and sulphur.
  • Diesel Particulate Filter - The diesel particulate filter captures discharge from the tailpipe and prevents them from circulating in the environment.
  • Biodiesel - Biodiesel is an alternative to diesel fuel and can be used in engines. Rather than coming from petroleum, biodiesel is made from chemically altered plant oil and animals fats.

A diesel engine is essentially an internal combustion unit that compresses air in order to produce heat, which in turn ignites the fuel. Sometimes these engines require certain parts and repairs. There are a number of large trucks, marine generators, and luxury cars that run on diesel fuel. However, sometimes these motors need to be rebuilt once they reach a certain age or condition. Fortunately both new and used diesel engines can be purchased through the right dealers and distributors. As you may be aware, diesel engines have been around for many decades now. While they are sometimes used in tractor trailers, they are also used in marine crafts that have water pumps on board. In some ways diesel engines are easier to use. For instance, diesel engines typically require less maintenance than gas motors. As for the amount of fuel and oil used in these motors, it really just depends on the truck or generator, and the gallons it holds. Some distributors purchase diesel engines from the manufacturer at wholesale cost, and then sell them to consumers. Industrial plants also utilize diesel engines for specific reasons, such as power generators. While some provide small amounts of electricity and air cooling, others are equipped to handle more. You can access the internet in order to learn more about diesel engines, and how they are repaired or rebuilt. In fact, there are new and used parts for these engines sold online. If you have additional questions, you can contact a distributor or manufacturer directly.
