Common Diesel Engine Terms

Diesel engines are an internal combustion engine where fuel oil is burnt. The oil is burnt by heat that is produced from air compression. This type of fuel is used to power large trucks, buses and marine vessels. Types of marine vessels include ships and high-powered boats. Trucks that have diesel engines have a number of advantages over gasoline engines, including better reliability and longer life span. Diesel engines have a 4-stroke combustion cycle.   • Fuel Pump - Fuel pumps used in diesel engines are designed to inject the liquid into the cylinder at high pressure.
  • Nitrous Oxide Emissions - Nitrous oxide emissions are found in diesel engine exhaust gas. These emissions are a result of gas temperature and pressure during the combustion. For environmental purposes, it's important to keep emissions as low as possible.
  • Turbocharging - Turbocharging is a method to increase the pressure in the diesel engine's cylinder for additional power.
  • Diesel Particulate Matter - Diesel particulate matter are particles found in exhaust. These particles may harm the environment and include soot and sulphur.
  • Diesel Particulate Filter - The diesel particulate filter captures discharge from the tailpipe and prevents them from circulating in the environment.
  • Biodiesel - Biodiesel is an alternative to diesel fuel and can be used in engines. Rather than coming from petroleum, biodiesel is made from chemically altered plant oil and animals fats.
