Some Popular Engraving Techniques Defined
Engraving is popular on rings, picture frames, and many other gifts. Engraving is an easy way to add a custom touch to an item. Here are some popular engraving methods.

  • Chasing – For chasing, an engraver normally takes a chisel and strikes it with a hammer to etch designs into an object. The tools involved allow for harder materials to be ornamented than with hand engraving.
  • Copper Wheel Engraving – Copper wheel engraving uses a copper wheel that is coated in an oily abrasive powder for the engraving process. Drill engraving is a similar technique. Rings and other metal items can be decorated using these or other similar methods.
  • Hand Engraving – Hand engraving is the most basic way to add ornamentation to an object. An engraver simply uses a sharp object to cut into a material. Wood is the easiest material to engrave this way.
  • Horn Carving – For this engraving technique, the horn is covered in wax or varnish and a design is scratched into it. A sharp tool is used to scrape out the pattern. The final engraving is often painted. Scrimshaw is a similar technique but involves ivory or bone rather than horn. Any of these unique items would be excellent gifts.
  • Laser Engraving – Laser engraving can be used on many materials but is very popular with delicate substances like glass and crystal. A machine is used to create the engraving, which allows for easy repetition of the same pattern on multiple items.
  • Sand Engraving – For sand engraving, an engraver uses a powerful air compressor to shoot sand at an object. Contact paper with the design cut out is typically used to avoid cutting the material in an undesired spot. This engraving technique is very popular with glass and other fragile materials.

The process of engraving can transform an ordinary item into something extra special by offering a custom message to the recipient. Engraving involves etching wording or designs on a piece of metal, glass, wood, or other material. Utilizing tools and machines such as routers, wording is inscribed forever on watches, trophies, frames, and wedding bands. Most engravers are metal engravers, and work out of jewelry, keepsake, or trinket stores. These shops may also sell charm bracelets, pet tags, awards, and ceramic boxes. People looking for a unique gift idea may purchase one of these items and have the engraver add a personal message to the item. Although engraving can be done by hand, many times professionals use precision tools and computerized machines, such as laser engravers to produce signs and jewelry boxes, for example. They work under strict deadlines, and busy seasons like Christmas, Mother's Day, wedding season, and birthdays are all popular times to buy engraved items. Even sports teams utilize engravers on a regular basis to inscribe a team trophy. Businesses may also be common customers of engravers, as they typically have products etched with the company logo to give out at trade shows or corporate meetings, for instance. Certain items, like tags, are necessary to identify people and pets. This is another common reason that people seek out engravers. Engravers may offer services like industrial engraving, gift personalization, Braille sign marking, and glass engraving. Other places, like jewelry stores, provide simple engraving for wedding rings and engagement rings. Some companies sell engraving machines and router systems, but don't actually provide the engraving service. Customers may learn more online, or contact their local jewelry or trinket store to get prices and turnaround times. Engravers often provide custom designs and fonts to meet any customer's needs.
