Terms to Know If You Think You Need Eyeglasses

Nearly 75% of America’s adult population wear eyeglasses, contacts or have had some kind of corrective surgery for their vision. Because of this, there are many eye doctors and specialty eyeglass stores across the country. Here are some good terms to know when shopping for eyeglasses.

  • Eyeglass Lens – The lens is the glass piece which is designed to help a person’s eyes focus on an object. Lenses are created at different thicknesses to help different eyesight problems.
  • Frame – The frame of eyeglasses is the part that holds the lens in place. Many people who wear eyeglasses use different frames to achieve style as well as to have clear sight.
  • Contact Lens – A contact lens is a lens made from a soft material called polymethyl methacrylate which is placed in a person’s eye to help them to see better. Contact lenses can also be worn for cosmetic purposes so that a person can have a brighter or different eye color.
  • Optometrist – An optometrist is an eye doctor. Optometrists can test their patient’s vision give them a prescription for eyeglasses if necessary. Optometrists are trained to always consider their patient’s safety first and to write a prescription for the best eyeglasses for their patient.
  • Laser surgery - Corrective eye surgery using technology rather than a scaple. This is performed by trained surgeons who use a laser to get under a person’s cornea and remove corneal tissue. This helps both near and far-sighted patients to see more clearly and read without wearing eyeglasses or contacts.

Many people whose sight needs help when they are reading or looking at things near or far choose to wear eyeglasses. Optometrists and eyeglass stores can easily be found through an internet search.
