Fabric Shop Terms

Sewing and making crafts can be a fun hobby. If you are just getting started quilting, sewing or designing clothes or doing other projects, then you will need to take a trip to the fabric shop for supplies. It is a good idea to know common fabric shop terms to help you on your shopping venture at a local store or online.

  • Upholster - To apply a new covering or cushioning to a piece of furniture. Upholstering can also refer to decorating the inside of a house with new drapes or carpets.
  • Damask - A reversible, patterned piece of silk, wool or other material.
  • Quilt - A bed cover made of two soft layers. Quilts are sometimes made of soft, fleece material.
  • Clasp - Two metal hooks that often hold apparel together especially cotton dresses and bras.
  • Vintage Fashion - Referring to accessories, clothes and styles from another decade or era. Fashion magazines often dictate which vintage pieces are back in style.
  • Notion - Any other object used in sewing other than the sewing machine and fabric. Examples of a notion are a thimble or a measuring tape.
  • Linen - A type of fabric that often is used as a substitute for cotton.
  • Pattern Weights - Place holders that can be used on paper patterns as an alternative to pins.
  • Flannel - A sometimes cheap, but very warm fabric. Flannel shirts often have a checkered print pattern. Under garments can also be made of flannel.
  • Yard - A unit of measurement. You can typically buy different fabrics by the yard. A yard is equal to 36 inches or 3 feet.

If you love to sew your own clothing, drapes, or upholstery covers, you need the proper supplies, such as fabric. Fabric shops should be your first stop on your way to stocking up on the necessary items you need for your project. From cotton and silk to fleece and wool, there are so many types of cloth out there to choose from, you may have a tough time deciding. Retail fabric shops often advertise sales in the local paper and offer downloadable coupons from their websites. This can save you lots of money on fabric, which isn’t cheap, especially if you need a lot of it. You can make beautiful quilts, shimmery drapes, or window topper curtains using materials picked up at a fabric store. Buy at the wholesaler level if you’re a seamstress or tailor, and you can save big time on cheap bulk discounts. If you like to sew on your own time and fulfill a few projects here and there, you’re best off visiting a retailer. You typically buy fabric such as printed upholstery covers by the yard. Sales associates can help you with measuring and cutting. Fabric shops have all the fashion accessories, patterns, and supplies you need. You can even find damask, a lustrous fabric featuring a weaved pattern made from silk, synthetic fibers, linen, or silk. Damask was a basic weaving technique used during the Middle Ages in Byzantine and Islamic areas. All the fabric you love to buy, such as flannel and cotton, all in a variety of styles, can also be purchased online. Browse notions and accessories that will help you sew that new dress or quilt from scratch. Pick up some apparel patterns, too, to help guide you in your project, whether you’re looking for vintage or modern designs.
