Fiberglass Terminology

If you have recently purchased a fiberglass product such as a pool, boat, or cover, there are some things you should know about the proper care of your new item. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the following terms to better understand fiberglass uses, materials and products.

  • Fiberglass - Most commonly, this term refers to a reinforced plastic material. In this case, fiberglass is a mixture of particularly-placed fibers and resin, and can be molded into shapes and parts of all sizes. Fiberglass can also be a type of thermal insulation with the texture and look of wool, which is made of glass filaments.
  • Molding - The process of shaping fiberglass and resin is called molding. This involves a mold for shaping in addition to heat and pressure. Pools, surfboards, spas, and doors are made using the molding process.
  • Release Agent - To prevent the fiberglass and resin from sticking during the molding process, a release agent or film is used.
  • Thread Count - This textile term is sometimes used to describe the thickness of a spool of residential insulation.
  • Roving - Roving refers to the number of threads or strands of fibers that are collected in a bundle in a parallel fashion, without twisting.
  • Curing Agent - A curing agent is used to harden a product during the final stages of of the molding process. This material is also referred to as a hardener.
  • Solvent - A solvent is the chemical that is used to remove epoxy and resin from tools and molding surfaces. It can be corrosive to fiberglass.

Fiberglass is used to make a wide variety of products. Suppliers often sell a lot of different products that are used for thermal insulation, swimming pool cover repair, protective clothing, and doors. Since industrial processes have shown that fiberglass spools can be used to make everything from clothes to spa products, it is important to find distributors that offer the types of options that you need. You can often determine which ones can serve your needs by accessing their websites and viewing their online catalogs for more information. Many of the companies that you find also sell construction materials. Fiberglass is used to make insulation for the whole house, including the roof and attic. By coating a wall’s interior with fiberglass insulation, you can dramatically improve the home’s efficiency by limiting thermal transfer that takes place between the house and the ground or air. These companies might also sell resin cloths, tape, rods, and molds that contain fiberglass parts. Some companies have contacts with manufacturers that can produce custom supplies for their clients. This makes it possible for you to purchase specific types of items that you might not be able to find in a store. If, for instance, you need a repair part, then you can order supplies that match the dimensions of the original piece. Suppliers sell their fiberglass products to other companies. If you are an individual who wants to purchase a bulk order, then they might be able to accommodate your request. By focusing on large orders, the companies generate profits even though they have discounted prices.
