Fiberglass Terminology

If you have recently purchased a fiberglass product such as a pool, boat, or cover, there are some things you should know about the proper care of your new item. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the following terms to better understand fiberglass uses, materials and products.

  • Fiberglass - Most commonly, this term refers to a reinforced plastic material. In this case, fiberglass is a mixture of particularly-placed fibers and resin, and can be molded into shapes and parts of all sizes. Fiberglass can also be a type of thermal insulation with the texture and look of wool, which is made of glass filaments.
  • Molding - The process of shaping fiberglass and resin is called molding. This involves a mold for shaping in addition to heat and pressure. Pools, surfboards, spas, and doors are made using the molding process.
  • Release Agent - To prevent the fiberglass and resin from sticking during the molding process, a release agent or film is used.
  • Thread Count - This textile term is sometimes used to describe the thickness of a spool of residential insulation.
  • Roving - Roving refers to the number of threads or strands of fibers that are collected in a bundle in a parallel fashion, without twisting.
  • Curing Agent - A curing agent is used to harden a product during the final stages of of the molding process. This material is also referred to as a hardener.
  • Solvent - A solvent is the chemical that is used to remove epoxy and resin from tools and molding surfaces. It can be corrosive to fiberglass.
