Fireworks Terminology

If you are planning on purchasing fireworks for a private show or public, city display, there are some important things to know about them before you make any purchases. Whether buying wholesale or retail consider the following terms and definitions before buying your fireworks.

  • AHJ - This in an acronym for authority having jurisdiction and will vary depending on your city laws. Check with your AHJ before purchasing any explosives to make sure that they are legal.
  • Bottle Rocket - A bottle rocket is a popular explosive to buy around the July 4th holiday because they are smaller firecrackers that are less complex and dangerous to use. They are typically purchased retail, but can be bought from wholesaler pyrotechnic companies.
  • Deflagrate - This is the scientific term that is used to explain how fireworks explode. All new, modern fireworks deglagrate by means of a chemical reaction, as opposed to gunpowder.
  • Fuse - Professional fireworks displays often require a series of fuses. Distributors will have these for sale along with pyrotechnics. The fuse allows the fireworks professional to safely light the firecracker from a safe distance.
  • High Explosives - High explosives are a subcategory of explosives separate from fireworks. All new, modern pyrotechnics are devoid of the explosives found in high explosives such as TNT and dynamite.
  • NFPA - This stands for the National Fire Protection Association. Is is the body of professionals that sets safety standards for the creation, transportation, storage, and ignition of firework pyrotechnics.
  • Safe and Sane - This is the term used to describe fireworks that don't explode with aerial effects. They include poppers and sparklers.

Fireworks are a fun, exciting way to celebrate a party, holiday, or cookout. Fireworks, explosives that give off brightly colored lights, smoke, and noise, are often seen at beaches, campgrounds, fairs, and parties, to the delight of young and old alike. They can range from the relatively tame, like firecrackers and sparklers, to the more heavy-duty types, such as commercial grade pyrotechnics. Fireworks are legal in some states and illegal in others. While they can be pretty to watch, they are inherently dangerous due to the gunpowder and other explosive ingredients involved. Although fireworks of all kinds are most commonly set off by qualified technicians on national holidays like the Fourth of July, they can also be used for private party events, beach cookouts, shows, and festivals. Indoors, they are typically called pyrotechnics when used as part of shows and concerts. Many wholesale fireworks stores can be found near vacation destinations like campgrounds and beaches: places people typically head to on vacation. Some dealers also boast websites where customers can view inventory and place bulk orders. Wholesale fireworks and explosives can be purchased in bulk at a discount. Usually, in the summer time, fireworks of all kinds can be found pretty cheap, with many wholesalers and retailers offering discounts and specials. You can even get gift certificates for friends and family members who love lighting off fireworks. Wholesalers that sell fireworks may also sell model rockets, cap guns, and safety gear, along with various designs of explosives and firecrackers. Towns and cities are typical customers of fireworks wholesalers, as they need large amounts of fireworks at once for municipal fireworks displays. These usually take place every Fourth of July, but are sometimes offered on a regular basis throughout the summer months at community parks or beaches.
