Fishermen Supply Terms

Whether you are fishing for freshwater bass in a small lake or for tuna in the ocean, there are many different angling supplies needed by fishermen. Fishermen invest in more than just a boat, a rod and a reel for their hobby, and the following are some fishing terms that go beyond the basics.

  • Jigs – Jigs are designed for water depths ranging from shallow to 150 feet. These angling accessories can move from side to side or spin around to attract fish. Because of their depth recommendation, jigs would be great for most bass fishing.
  • Float – A float, or bobber, floats on the surface of water. If a fish grabs the bait dangling underneath, the float bobs to notify the fisher of a catch.
  • Leader – A leader is used to attach a hook or lure to the end of the fishing line. This attachment is often made from wire or another similarly strong material. Leaders should be used when seeking fish with teeth, sharp gill covers, or strong tail muscles.
  • Lure – Lures are virtually any fishing supplies that have hooks and are meant to draw fish. There are lures for everything from fly to deep water fishing.
  • Terminal tackle – Terminal tackle refers to any fishing supplies that are used at the end of a line. Hooks, sinkers, and jigs are examples of terminal tackle.
  • Waxwing Jig – Waxwing jigs are made for fishing just below the surface of the water. These lures zigzag and hop around. Waxwing jigs are great for saltwater and fly fishing.

Fishing, once an activity born out of necessity, now represents a widely enjoyed recreational activity that many people partake in. Some even consider fishing a professional sport. Some people nostalgically remember fishing with a line and a cane pole, but many aficionados today are privy to a wide range of supplies and gadgets to help enhance their sporting experience. Basic supplies such as rods and reels are available at many types of retail outlets. Convenience stores near lakes and ocean often carry bait, poles, reels and lures. Salt water and fly fishing equipment is available at most sporting good stores. They usually carry a line of equipment that ranges from cheap to more high quality products. Customers can shop for most basic gear at these types of establishments. These stores are popular stops for novice fishermen or families just out to have a little fun. More serious fishermen may shop at retail outlets geared specifically for fishing and other sporting activities. These stores carry the widest array of tackle and attire. They may carry specialty items such as custom equipment or electric reels. They also carry clothing items, including hats and raincoats. Boat and marine shops also include the sale of equipment. They carry rigs that are outfitted for deep sea excursions, as well as smaller lake fishing trips. In addition to selling boats, marine stores carry special gear designed for salt water fishing. Commercial fishing supplies are another branch of this industry. Nets, lines and other ocean specific items are often sold wholesale to those who make their living catching and reselling fish and other seafood. These supplies are usually ordered by retailers directly from the manufacturer.
