Key Fishing Bait and Tackle Words Defined

Whether you are going freshwater or saltwater fishing, it is important to have the right equipment for the fish you are trying to catch. Below are seven terms to be familiar with when shopping for fishing bait and tackle.

  • Bait - Placed on a fishing hook to attract and catch fish. Insects, small fish, and plastic bait are commonly used.
  • Lure - A device with hooks, attached to a fishing line, to catch fish. Lures are used to simulate the movement of a fish's natural prey.
  • Float - An object attached to a fishing line that floats on the water, dangling bait at a specific depth. Floats are also used as bite indicators, to let a fisher know something is happening to their hook or bait.
  • Sinker - A weight used on a fishing line to increase casting distance or the rate that bait sinks.
  • Line - A cord that is cast using a fishing rod and reeled in to catch fish. Lines come in different lengths and weights for different types of fishing.
  • Rod - A long, bendable pole used to cast a fishing line into the water, and reel in the line. Many rods are specially made for catching certain fish. For example, heavy-duty rods are required for carp fishing because carp are a very large and strong fish.
  • Tackle - All fishing equipment. Tackle includes baits and lures, floats and sinkers, hooks, lines, rods, and reels. Tackle is often stored in a tackle box, which may have trays or small compartments to keep gear organized.
  • Fly Fishing - A type of fishing that makes use of a special weighted line to cast lightweight bait, called a fly, into the water. Fly fishing for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and trout is incredibly popular.

If you are going fishing, you are going to need the right bait and tackle. There are a lot of different kinds of fishing, from fly to deep sea, so you should have an idea of what you want to do before you go shopping. If you plan to fish in freshwater, you could be going after trout or catfish. You might also catch carp or even bass, which is found in both fresh and saltwater. You find freshwater fish in rivers and lakes. To catch any of these fish you will need a fishing pole with a good reel. You’ll also need a strong line and hooks. Your hooks might be on a lure, which is synthetic bait, or you might hide them in natural bait. You might find natural bait yourself, such as worms and minnows, or you can buy it frozen. When buying your tackle, which is what you call the gear you use to fish, you should keep in mind what you want to catch. For example, if you are fly fishing for trout, you will need to buy lures. If you are fishing for sea bass, you will need a strong rod. Like any sport, fishing requires a level of skill and endurance. You need to be comfortable assembling and using tackle, and you might need some knowledge of managing a boat or kayak to get to your desired location. You should also know how to tie proper knots on your hooks to keep the fish from getting away. Whether you are going after carp, trout or even bass, fishing is an enjoyable pastime.
