Millions of Americans join fitness centers and gyms in order to exercise regularly. After all, these local businesses typically offer professional, personal trainers and instructors to assist you with fitness and athletics. However, it is important to know what you are getting into prior to joining any health clubs or gyms. This is why we have created a list of helpful key terms and definitions, which are posted below.

  • Triathlon – This is essentially an athletic contest that involves three different major events. Often these three endurance events are swimming, long-distance running, and cycling.
  • Pilates – A system of physical exercise that incorporates a special apparatus which helps you build muscle, improve posture, increase flexibility, and heighten mental awareness.

  • Yoga – A Hindu-derived discipline that involves controlled breathing and specific body postures. It is a form of stretching, meditation, and physical exercise that is practiced worldwide.
  • Home Gym – This typically refers to an all-inclusive workout machine. Most home gyms are about strength training and building muscle tissue. These units usually offer a stack of weight plates that are connected to cables. This way the weights can be lifted with various upper and lower-body exercises.
  • Calisthenics – Exercises that are done without the need for machines and devices. These exercises often improve body strength, range of movement, grace, and balance. Some examples are push-ups, jumping jacks, sit-ups, and hand stands.

    In historic times, the need for exercise programs was minimal. Man spent time hunting animals, gathering food, and building their homes and shelters. Fast forward to 1936 and noted health and athletic instructor Jack LaLanne opened the first official fitness club. In the modern world, life has become easy. People spend long days behind a computer or television. The need for a solid gym program is necessary for many. Fitness centers provide ample opportunities to keep in shape. You pay a monthly or yearly membership. You then have access to exercise machines like stationary bikes and treadmills, personal trainers, and indoor swimming pools. Join an athletic program lead by a qualified instructor or work to build up muscles with a personal trainer. Your membership fee pays for these services. Many establishments have indoor running tracks, exercise studios, and equipment rooms. Jog or walk on the indoor track and stop worrying about attacks by dogs or strangers. Prepare for an upcoming triathlon. Get a workout in an instructor-led aerobics, yoga, or Zumba classes. You choose the activities that appeal to you. Blending diet with physical exertion leads to effective weight loss and muscle-building. The first few days in a new program generally make people feel incredibly sore. Within weeks, the pain is gone and muscle tone has improved. Noticeable improvements to the body become visible. Soon, you feel like a new person. Contact your local gym for current rates.
