Popular Floor Material Terms

Floors are available in all types of materials, and it's up to the home or building owner to decide what they want installed. Whether someone wants carpet or wood floors, it's important that they are well-maintained to ensure longevity. While one person may like the aesthetics of a hard wood floor, someone else may prefer that the carpet match the decor in an office. At the same time, a rubber flooring may be ideal in fitness centers, while parquet floors are useful in basketball gyms.

  • Linoleum - Linoleum is a surfacing material that is made of a mixture of pine rosin, linseed oil and resins.
  • Plank - A plank is a piece of wood that is installed in parallel rows and may be used as the foundation for flooring.
  • Parquet - Parquet is a type of tile flooring that is composed of individual pieces that are assembled together. The square tiles may feature grooves that interlock with each other.
  • Build Coat - A build coat is a finishing material that is transparent and applied over the sealant to protect the final product.
  • Laminate - Laminate is a composition of two or more layers that are united together to create a floor. For example, a wood flooring may be covered with a plastic layer for protection.
  • Air Bubbles - Air bubbles may become trapped underneath a floor. They will need to be smoothed out to ensure safety. Air bubbles can be prevalent in epoxy floor coating.
  • Leveling - Leveling is the process of ridding the floor of surface defects, such as mark and ripples.
  • Grain - Grain is a term used to describe the direction and alignment of a hard wood floor.

Floors take the brunt of everyday living. We walk on them with shoes, or slide around them in our socks. We drop dishes and toys on them, and cause tiny cracks and imperfections every time we do so. Even pets and kids contribute to the wear and tear of floors, causing scratches and lots of dirt build up. It makes sense, then, that flooring should be durable to take these beatings and provide a long life of service. There are many types of floor materials out there, from ceramic and linoleum to hardwood and even brick. Some people choose to carpet their whole house, while others like hardwood floors throughout. It’s really a matter of personal preference which one you choose. Carpet insulates and provides a softer, warmer floor surface to walk on. Hardwood or ceramic coverings are easier to clean, but they can be hard and cold on the feet. Contractors can provide installation, repair, refinishing, and resurfacing of all types of floor materials such as tiles. These professionals often buy their supply items from a floor materials wholesaling company to receive a bulk discount, or from retail stores. Do-it-yourselfers can install floor materials on their own. There are price range differences inherent in floor materials. Some, like bamboo, are easy on the environment but can be expensive. Slate and marble can also carry a high price tag. Linoleum or laminate, on the other hand, are quite cheap. Many people choose to repair or refinish the flooring in their kitchens and bathrooms, as these are the rooms with the heaviest traffic. You can find floor materials in local home improvement stores, through wholesalers, and online. These providers may offer a wide range of construction supplies and equipment, along with floor coverings, such as rug, hardwood, ceramic, and vinyl tiles.
