Important Terms about Floor Waxing, Polishing, & Cleaning

Sooner or later, you’re probably going to have to get your floor cleaned, waxed, or polished. Whether you decide to do the job yourself or hire a company to do it, there are some basic terms and concepts associated with floor cleaning that may be unclear to you. Familiarize yourself with various terms related to the category.

  • Hardwood Floor – A floor made of material derived from angiosperm trees, whose seeds have protective coverings. Hardwood material is generally denser than softwood, but this is not always true.
  • Softwood Floor – A floor made of material derived from gymnosperm trees, whose seeds do not have a protective covering. Softwood is usually more pliable and less dense than hardwood. Softwood is relatively inexpensive but also damages more easily.
  • Refinish – Putting a new surface on an old floor.
  • Honing – The process in which scratches or similar flaws are removed from stone or granite flooring, smoothing out the surface.
  • Grind – Using a machine to eradicate bumps, roughness, stains, unevenness, or another blemish on a concrete floor. Grinding is often used in garages.
  • Buff – To polish or shine a floor. A machine that performs this task is called a buffer. Some buffers can also clean carpets with the use of a circular pad called a bonnet.
  • Stain – Using dyes or chemicals to permanently add color, called a stain, to flooring. Staining is generally performed with one of three liquid-based methods: water, alcohol, or oil.
  • Screening – The process of removing the top layer of flooring without affecting the stain.
  • Stripping – Removing the old finish of a floor so a new one can be applied. Stripping is effective on floors with unsightly wax build up. This task is sometimes carried out with a stripping machine, which often can be used to clean carpets.

If you have hardwood floors, it can be a challenge to polish them properly. If you are trying to add sparkle to your residential or commercial space, floor wax might be the right product for a shiny end result. You first have to make sure the floor is clean. Wax will generally work on both hardwood and tile. You can either purchase a cleaner that has polish in it, or even go so far as to rent or buy a buffer machine. This machine is great for large jobs such as going over the floors in an entire company office building. You may have even seen the janitor pushing one of these heavy machines around, or even noticed one sitting in a neighbor’s garage. If your floors are old and wax doesn’t seem to be working, you may have to strip and refinish them. This will only work for wood floors. You will first sand the floors to ensure the removal of the old finish. After that, you should scrub the floors to get rid of any debris before applying a new stain. If refinishing your floors is too much work or the upkeep involved in waxing is unrealistic for your home, there are other options. Consider installing carpet flooring instead. Carpet is a great alternative. It can be used in the bedroom and living room. You should have either wood or tile in the kitchen and bathroom, because water can damage carpet. Keeping your floors looking great might be a challenge, but if you make the decision that is best for your home, you will be happy and satisfied for years to come.
