Definitions of Food Brokers

Between the farmer in his field and the packaged product for sale at the local chain grocery store, there is usually a food broker. A food broker is a sales representative who sales the products of producers and manufacturers to retail, chain and independent wholesale stores. Using food brokers saves the time and money of producers and manufacturers because they do not have to hire salespeople for marketing and consulting. Likewise, retailers and wholesalers do not have to spend a good deal of time consulting with hundreds of different producers. The following are terms associated with food brokers.

  • Chain store – A type of store built around the brand, where all stores of the same names sell the same products and are owned by the same company. Food brokers deal primarily with chain grocery stores who sell food and beverage products.
  • Supply centers – Also called distribution centers, in the food industry this is where food and beverages are warehoused before being distributed over a regional area. Supply centers are often located adjacent to major highways.
  • Organic food – Food produced naturally, without using certain chemicals. Often, food brokers will specialize in the organically-raised food. These brokers may use only organic producers and manufacturers and sell to natural foods market retailers and wholesalers.
  • Regional – A limited area of distribution or where a distributor can work. In this case, most food brokers are limited to certain areas of their specialty. In urban areas this area may be smaller than rural areas.
  • Wholesale – The sale of goods to retailers, professionals or consumers other than the household customer. These buyers often purchase in bulk. Often, wholesalers do not have to charge sales taxes on their products.

Food brokers are independent sales professionals and consultants that are responsible for selling all kinds of foods to distributors, vendors and businesses. Often the broker will work like a middle man between major manufacturers or wholesalers and smaller grocery stores and supermarkets. This is a major trade that incorporates all sorts of organic produce, beverages, all-natural meats, and various snack foods into its line of business. Retail stores usually purchase foods through a broker, and then distribute them to customers through their stores. There is certainly a great deal involved with the food industry. This is why food brokers have to handle a large array of specialty snacks, high quality dairy products, organic meats, and fresh breads. Many grocery stores and supermarkets need a large supply of beverages and food each week. Depending on the company or grocery store chain you are working with, they may require only natural or organic food deliveries. While some of these retail supermarkets are independent, others are located across the country. Typically you will sell food and beverage products to these stores in large bulk orders with each business demanding wholesale rates. One way to learn more about food brokers and consultants is accessing their online websites for more details. This way you can gather all kinds of facts and details pertaining to common wholesale rates, specialty items, popular beverages, and organic produce. Depending on how industrial or large certain towns or cities are, they may have a higher demand for wholesale food products. As our population increases, the food industry will also continue to grow.
